Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

12oz bottle - pours thick like dirty motor oil and a finger of creamy beige head. Decent lacing. Nose is roasted malts, dark fruits and chocolate. Flavor adds coffee. Nice bitterness on the backend, similar to unsweetened dark chocolate. Light sweetness but quickly overwhelmed. Hides the ABV well. Quickly becoming a sipping beer. Though I expected more sweetness, I am glad to have tried this beer.

Another one that I can’t believe took me so long to try. On tap at HOTB. Pours a dark brown black with a medium brown head. Aromas of fudge, ash, tobacco. Taste is lightly sweet and acrid. Really well balanced and flavorful. Body is medium thick. Carbonation is medium low.

12 oz. bottle from Whole Foods, listed at $2.99 but they only charged me $1.99. STICKING IT TO THE MAN. Woo. Pours dark brown, nearly black with a modest mocha head. Nose is piney hops hiding underneath chocolatey and bitter coffee malts. Taste is both sweet and bitter. Full, warming palate. A bit boozy. I imagine this could taste even better after maybe a year.

On tap at Hellbenders Burritos in Davis, WV. Opaque, deep dark brown with small brown head and very good lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, toffee and coffee. Taste of alcohol, dark roasted malt, chocolate, molasses, toffee and roasted coffee. Full body and medium/high carbonation with a velvety, foamy mouthfeel. A beer that is almost too big for its own good. The booze overshadows the other flavors and masks much of the complexity. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a four finger tan head that slowly fades leaving a good lace. Black color, no highlights. Medium carbonation and medium-heavy bodied. Roasted coffee nose and flavor is roasted coffee, higher ABV is hidden. $2.60 for a 12oz bottle from a Tully’s Beer & Wine Wells, ME.

Bottle. Heavy toasted note for the malt, moderate resin for the hops, light earth for the yeast, with tar, vanilla, chalk and anise in the background. Head is small, frothy, light brown with fair lacing and good legs, and diminishes to a small ring. Color is almost black. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately sweet, lightly acidic, and moderately to heavily bitter. Palate is medium to full, creamy with a soft carbonation and a chalky, moderately alcoholic and dry finish. Deep, dark and rich aromas and flavors. Awesome Imperial Stout, with a perfect mouthfeel for the style, and so much better as it warms.

12oz bottle poured into snifter. Was very surprised by how much roasted cocoa flavor I got out of this. The aroma has a slight hop presence but the roasted malts really take center stage here. Very good beer!

Pours a pitch black with a thin brown head that leaves good lacing. Nose is of coffee, raisins and licorice. Roasted malt galore. Taste is of chocolate, coffee and some peppery alcohol and licorice. Body is full and carbonation moderate. Mouthfeel is airy and smooth. Overall a nice imperial stout and further more a really available one!
