Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Style: Imperial Stout
Hops: Magnum, Challenger

12oz bottle poured into a Snifter at 43°. Color is black with light carbonation and a small tight brown head. Aroma is a sweet roasted malt scent with a hint of alcohol in the back. It has a medium body with a heavy yet crisp mouth feel. Flavor of deep roasted malt, giving a bit of coffee with a sweet hard candy sugar sweetness which is capped off with a quick bitterness and just a hint of the hops that show with a bit of citrus. In the after taste the bitterness drops off leaving the sweet to linger on. Overall I feel its just a bit off, the sweet becomes a little sharp after a while and the last time I had it after drinking an IPA which just made it taste like a candy necklace.

Bottle - black with a slim brown head. Aroma of chocolate, roast malts, coffee, molasses. Intense and complex indeed on the flavour front, roasted, malty, chocolate, salty, meaty, some late bitterness. Full bodied, excellent.

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2013 Pours black with medium, frothy tan head. Aroma of coffee, chocolate, hints of dates and burnt sugar. Taste is creamy chocolate sweet at first followed by a huge coffee bitter that rounds off with a licorice and molasses finish. Body is rich and creamy with soft carbonation.

UPDATED: NOV 20, 2012 Bottle shared by bvery, thanks dude! Very good impy stout but throw in some bourbon and thay would be a winner. Re-rate - bottle from AV1 on November 20, 2012. Black pour with the nitro type look, thick mocha head and lacing. Chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and a little bit of hops. Taste was consistent with aroma and had a slight alcohol and bitter finish. Bumped up my appearance, taste and palate by one each.

MadRobin (1829) - Silver Spring, USA - NOV 10, 2012
On tap at Hellbenders Burritos in Davis, WV. Opaque, deep dark brown with small brown head and very good lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, toffee and coffee. Taste of alcohol, dark roasted malt, chocolate, molasses, toffee and roasted coffee. Full body and medium/high carbonation with a velvety, foamy mouthfeel. A beer that is almost too big for its own good. The booze overshadows the other flavors and masks much of the complexity. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
