Narwhal Imperial Stout is the latest beer in Sierra Nevada’s High Altitude Series. This malt-forward monster is bold – with notes of baker’s cocoa, molasses, and dark roasted coffee. This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Style: Imperial Stout
Hops: Magnum, Challenger

Had at Bottlecraft In San Diego. Pours dark brown with a thin tan head. Not much in aroma. Flavor is very malty caramel and sweet. Close to a barley wine. Not much roast. Great beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured a deep, deep black with a semi-generous head. Nice lacing. Nose of coffee followed through in the flavours. Alcohol well hidden.

355 ml bottle, 2012 Vintage. Pitch black with a thin, light tan head. Roasted aroma with dark chocolate, coffee, dried sweet fruits, licorice and hard roasted malts. Taste is sweet. Full body, thick texture and a soft carbonation. Finishes sweet with hard roasted malts, bitter chocolate, licorice and a hint of alcohol. Very straightforward Imperial Stout, well balanced as rest of the Sierra Nevada beers.

12 oz. bottle from a 4 pack bought at Whole Foods P Street. Pours a viscous black with a smallish dark tan frothy dense head. Nose and flavor are rife with bitter dark chocolate and espresso roast, cacao nib, and hints of vanilla and almond sweetness. The roasty char character is gorgeous, a bit reminiscent of Expedition. Rich and lush on the palate. Damn good.

Bottle. Opaque black. Frothy deep tan head, slowly diminishing. Aroma of cocoa, roasted grain, grapefruit with hint of molasses, vanilla, alcohol. The flavor is moderately to heavily sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes moderately sweet, lightly to moderately bitter and lightly acidic. Fully body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. Sweet cocoa taste balanced by lingering hop and roast bitterness and peppery alcohol, but not quite enough. Taste of vanilla, burnt malts, coffee. Rich mouthfeel. This is a good imperial stout, but the sweetness gets to be too much. Lots of imperial stouts out there just as good, many better.

Draft at Busters on 28th. Black body with one of the browbeat heads I’ve seen. Excellent lace. Milk chocolate aroma. Amazingly strong hop profile. Enjoying this more than the Bells Black Note I had earlier. Outstanding.

Bottle from Pilgrim’s Market, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, USA. A dark brown/black coloured pour with a healthy beige head on top. Roasty, malty, chocolate, coffee aroma. Tastes similar, really roasty, malty, coffee, chocolate, slightly bitter and dry. Rich tasting Imperial Stout that would probably improve with a bit of age.

UPDATED: DEC 21, 2013 Bottle from Starmore and Boss, Sheffield. Nearly black. Brown halo of head. Aroma is licorice, blackcurrant sweets. Some leather. Taste is big toffee apple sweetness initially, that gives way to a burnt, dry, roast bitterness. Palate is full, and oily. Dry and bitter, but not harsh finish. Good beer to end an evening.
