4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours an opaque black with a big dark tan head that diminishes somewhat, but stays. Aroma is licorice, blackstrap molasses and espresso. Taste is a complex combination of those noted in the aroma as well as dark roasted grain and bitter dark chocolate. Alcohol not evident in the taste, though expresses itself as warmth after the swallow. This is a big one; not for the faint of heart.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle pours jet black with minimal tan head with little retention. Nose is of grain and roasted coffee. Taste follows this trend with addition of pine and citrus. Bitterness pulls through on finish. Body is solid albeit perhaps a tad thin and not as silken as expected.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Heavy aroma of brown sugar, flour, and coffee. Viscous crude oil appearance. Powerful, stinging bitter front, boozey molasses finish. Thick like coal tar, yet still finished like whiskey shot. Probably best I didnít go with the bomber.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This is a pretty brilliant effort by the folks at Sierra Nevada. Pours jet black with a smallish burnt mocha head. I love that they used honey in here -- itís apparent, and warms it up in a really lovely way. Nose is dark chocolate and molasses, with a hint of coffee and some burnt marshmallow. Itís only a tad hot, and that would surely fade with some age. Flavor brings the hops to counter all that sweetness and bring out the roasty qualities in the malts. Nice and thick. Iím impressed -- really hope this one becomes a regular seasonal!

UPDATED: OCT 15, 2013 Draft at Moriartys. Pitch black with a nice brown foam. Not much aroma, when cold at least. Deep, dark, burnt, unsweetened chocolate. Blackened cinnamon pepper pie with molasses. Charcoal grill. Body is a bit thin, but really great dark notes.
