Poured a black body with a nice brown head that had some retention and a bit of lace. Aroma had nice roasted coffee and chocolate malts upfront a nice kick of saddle leather to it. Flavor had great balance with nice roasted malts. A nice strong roasted coffee presence upfront. Great balance from the chocolate malts which were sweet enough to complement the bitterness of the coffee malts. Alcohol seemed well hidden, could note detect molasses. Still a good beer.

Pours black as the night with a large, dark tan head. Nose shows chocolate, heavy roast, soft coffee. Also some light booze and a hint of wood smoke. Heavy roasted flavours too, some chocolate and a fair bit of booze. Nice creamy carbonation. Would be even better if the booze wasn’t so full-on.

Trev (1935) - Lakeville, Minnesota, USA - NOV 4, 2012
bottle: Pour is very dark brown / pretty much black with a thick tan foamy head. aroma is cocoa, dark roasted malt/coffee. Sweet but not cloying flavour. Chocolate syrup (flavour, not syrupy body) with bitter dark roast coffee tones. Alc is blended perfectly. Very drinkable, nice medium to deep roasted flavour, a touch on the sweet side but not overly. Nice burnt malt bitterness in the finish.

On tap at Hellbenders Burritos in Davis, WV. Opaque, deep dark brown with small brown head and very good lacing. Aroma of milk chocolate, caramel, roasted malt, toffee and coffee. Taste of alcohol, dark roasted malt, chocolate, molasses, toffee and roasted coffee. Full body and medium/high carbonation with a velvety, foamy mouthfeel. A beer that is almost too big for its own good. The booze overshadows the other flavors and masks much of the complexity. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

12 oz bottle pours pitch black with a light tan head that sticks around. Very nice. Initial hit of vanilla and anise, plus a bit of booze. Mostly sweet flavor of molasses, more anise, some bitter roast balancing it out, plus some chocolate. Thick mouthfeel. Top notch.
