3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Had better imperial stouts. Pours black with hints of a brown head that never really forms, and quickly goes away. Some roasted malts on the nose - but it is faint. I am not getting the multiple tastes that others are - for me, this is roasted malt, some bitterness, and some booze. Maybe there is some bitter coffee, but this does not have the range of flavors in other imperial stouts. I do like the mouthfeel - it has a chewy quality to it. Overall, it's fine - just not great.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle, 2014 vintage. Coffee/roasted malt aroma with notes of molasses and chocolate. Pours black as night with a thin light brown head with good retention and lacing. A very rich and full-bodied stout that starts with dark chocolate and molasses flavors. The finish is a bit dry, but luxuriously smooth with slight hints of roasted malt and coffee that clings to palate after the sip. Excellent stout!

12 oz. bottle - 2014 on the label. Pours black, I held this up to the light and it’s like a black hole - nothing came back. Very slight tan head that disappeared very quickly. Aroma of chocolate, roasted coffee & malt. Full bodied, the taste was much of the same as the aroma with a little sweetness thrown into the mix. Finish kept the same theme with the coffee coming through a little more. The chocolate coated the mouth for a bit. Some warming after the swallow as well. Well done!

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
A rich, black-brown liquid flows from the bottle into a stout glass, covered in a chocolaty foam. The head becomes almost immediately insignificant, dropping into the beer and leaving only a trace of itself on the surface of the brew. A boozy vanilla and thin molasses fill the air above the glass, the aroma not huge, but scintillating. First sip is a nice roasted coffee, hints of molasses, a basic, Imperial Stout; then the second sip and third. Not as impressed as I was the first time. A nice forward, but the taste is just salty, lightly bitter and takes away from the flavor of the brew. A little thin texturally. and too soft to carry the flavor. Not a lot of carbonation here and I’m wondering what this will be like in a year. I’m going out to buy a second. See you back here in a year with this one. I need to give this another chance considering the ratings here, because I am just not finding that sweet spot that everyone else is enjoying. Very eh.

4.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Jet black with attractive tan head that quickly vanishes, leaving slight, decorative lacing.
Bouquet is roasted malt, that is all. In the glass, though, dark roasted coffee takes over, with slight chalkiness and well-controlled bitter cocoa. The 10.2 percent ABV comes as no surprise, but it translates into strength, not burn.
Yes, it’s big, but not in a wreck-your-palate way, more like picking you up and carrying you onward. Definitely one to age; it could well get better. An exemplary stout.

3.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
This imperial stout gets it mostly right. The aroma falls short out of the bottle, but is mostly roasted malt with a hint of sweetness. Taste is big on malt; bitter chocolate plays a major role. The alcohol is perfectly balanced with the malt and hops.

Narwhal Imperial Stout is very dark. Black even. Very complex and rich. Tan head and is great in colder months.

This made me think of various types of Guinness brews but I actually prefer Narwhal.

Thanks to spinrsx for this. Pours black with a big fizzy brown head that lowers to a wisp. Aroma is orange citrus hops, with vanilla and roasted malts. Taste is awesome. Great balance with some sweet vanilla beans and mocha but is light as I like it. Citrus hops add complexity that I love. Great beer.
