This massive imperial stout is incredibly complex, rich, and intense and will develop in the bottle for years to come.

Might be my favorite imperial stout now. Pours with a thick head. Definitely smell molasses and chocolate. Taste includes chocolate, caramel, and molasses. FULL body!

UPDATED: NOV 10, 2012 Midnight black pour, thick tan head that dissipates to form a lasting ring. Gigantic, deep nose of roast coffee, cacao, prunes, dates, figs, plums, and cedar shavings. Flavor is similar with great hops in the endless finish. Massive, syrupy body that coats the mouth with all of the above. I’ve never been a fan of black IPAs, and this is reminiscent of those, but with the needed addition of the fruitiness, which transforms it into something amazing.

Bottle from Smith Street Cellars. Full marks. Aromas of chocolate, vanilla, and hints of liquorice. Taste is sweet and bitter, with very long length. Palate is syrupy, and full bodied. Black, with an off-white head.

355ml bottle from Slow Beer. Perfect wet weather for a big bold imperial stout and what a cracker this is. Pours like oil thick and viscous. Black as the ace of spades with a light milk chocolate foam cap. Knock your socks off aroma of vanilla, aniseed and coffee. Tastes as good as it looks and smells and fills the mouth with a wonderful flavour that goes on and on and on.Sierra Nevada never cease to amaze and never ever disappoint.

Tastes of coffee and molasses. The alcohol is very well hidden. Smooth and easy to drink. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle. I opened this bottle and as soon as the aroma hit my nose I could tell this was going to be an epic beer!... It is Epic... an unbelievable beer! Thick and fulsome black body with a very thin brown head, Lovely syrupy crispy chocolate aroma, a very full on taste... layered with a sweet syrupy chocolate cake like taste upfront which evolves into a lovely cocoa middle and finishes with a crisp burnt chocolate finish. This beer is absolutely sublime! It is without doubt one of the best I have had from Sierra Nevada and beyond... definitely gets full marks!

This is exactly what I imagine a perfect imperial stout is like. Creamy, sexy, notes of black plum and dark, dark chocolate. Rotting fruit and heavy cocoa. The head was fairly thick and caramel colored. I love the aftertaste (like chocolate aftertaste), and I highly enjoy that pouring this brew from a bottle was just as delicious as a good tap. Can’t wait to try it from the tap, though.

Absolutely loved this. This is really like a slightly less-complex bodied version of Old Rasputin but with a bit more kick, in the body and afterwards. And isn’t too thick. Excellent.

This is just a home run from Sierra Nevada. Think Victory Storm King meets Old Rasputin. Velvety-smooth, with floral hop bitterness, cool roastiness and a clean, dry finish. Hoppiness makes it stand out from the Imperial Stout mainstream, perfect balance and drinkability means it punches with the best of them. An instant classic. Can’t wait to see how it ages.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2012 Absolutely fantastic. Narwhal deftly avoids the pitfalls of many Imperial stouts, hiding its 10% alcohol and maneuvering around the syrupy sweetness of some cousins. Pours black with a slight tan ring of head. Nice right carbonation does a good job of scraping the tongue. Dark espresso and cocoa pervade, and some light high alpha hops add some nice tongue-zinging spice. An absolute masterpiece.
