Sampled on 11/8/2012. This Imperial Stout pours a eclipse black color from a 12oz bottle. Medium to large sized tan foamy head with good retention and nice lacing. The aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and sweet. A medium to full bodied Imperial Stout. The malts are chocolate, coffee, roasted malt and molasses. The hops are earthy and herbal. Decent carbonation. A pretty big stout, lots of roasty and chocolate malts, yet fairly bitter. This one could be really interesting with a couple of years of bottle aging. Or even better some time in a whisky/bourbon/rum barrel. Touch of alcohol at the finish. Nice sipping beer. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter.

355 ml. bottle obtained in a trade with tlahav. Thanks! Split by 2. Black, little mocha head. Nose is coffee, lightly vinous, coffee, liquorish, herbal, light red grape,… Taste is red grape, sour molasses, liquorish, herbal, bread, quite bitter, soy sauce, light coffee, touch red grape, a bit too vinous for me, tad sour coffee,… A tad lighter body. Not bad but I definitely expected more, above average for an USA stout of reputation.

Version 2014.

Couleur noire opaque, mousse moka. Arôme de malt torréfié, alcool, chocolat, mélasse. Goût de malt torréfié, alcool, chocolat noir, touche de café, bonne amertume. Carbonatation moyenne, corps moyen-dense.

12 Fl. Oz. bottle. Pkgd 20/10/14. Jet black colour with a dense, creamy tan head which lasted well before settling to a ring and left some very nice lace lines. Roasted malt aroma of espresso, dark chocolate, molasses, prunes, tar and port. Light to medium sweetness and medium bitterness. Very roasty. Medium to full body. Slick texture, soft carbonation, noticeable alcohol (reminiscent of vodka but without the burn) and a long roasted, bittersweet finish. Very nice and also very drinkable.

Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma is on the weaker side, roasted malts, sweet molasses, some cherries? Tastes like well roasted coffee with a dry bitter finish. Mouthfeel is really oily and thick, silky smooth with very little carbonation. For an IS it’s not that special but still very well exhibits the typical characteristics. I like it but it’s a tough category to compete in.

A really nice roasty, cocoa-ey, sweetish imperial stout. Sierra Nevada strikes a nice balance here, which is perhaps what they do best.
