3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Location: 12 oz bottle from Norm’s, 11/20/12
Aroma: The nose is big on roasted malts, dark chocolate, burnt malts, coffee, pepper, and booze
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color with a small light brown head and very light lace
Flavor: The taste is really malty, not sweet, more roasty and bitter of a flavor, with an alcoholic finish
Palate: The body leans full, it has a smooth, creamy feel, with a dry, roasted and fairly hot finish to it
Thanks Kramer! This one was a more then solid example of the style. It didn’t completely blow me out of the water, but it is still a heck of a solid beer. At 10% + ABV, and a with a burn to show for it, this one is definitely a sipper, but a sipper I enjoyed sipping.

4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pitch black with beautiful tan head, leaving considerable lacing on the glass. This looks like an Imperial Stout all right.
Very strong aromas of coffee, alcohol, chocolate etc. Very big on the alcohol.
Roasted/toasted barley, cocoa and coffee beans hit the tongue. Very creamy, fairly big body, medium carbonation.
As far as imperial stouts go, this stands among the finest.

On tap at whole foods. Aroma is all chocolate and coffee and the taste follows suit. Really nice balance with roasted coffee and a sweet chocolate finish. A really thin head and no lacing. Thick body with low carbonation. I would love to try the bourbon barrel version.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle. Thick roasty nose, with raisins, bitter chocolate, coffee, canned cat food, a bit of burnt rubber and some fumes. Opaque dark brown. Strong dark chocolate initial, bussing hops, shredded coconut, bit of licorice. Very nice stuff. Changes nicely throughout the palate. Seems a tad thin for the high alcohol, but still very nice stuff.

2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 1/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 3/20
Poured from a bottle. Pitch black and opague. The aroma suggests an excellent example of Imperial style stout. It was fantastic right up to the point where the burnt flavored liquid hit my tongue. It was all downhill from there. Sometimes stouts get better as they warm up or their high alcohol content kicks in. It did get less bad but never crossed the threshold to average, let alone good. Perhaps Sierra has a quality control problem. I have tried several of their various beers and have yet to find one worthy of the exaulted scores they receive.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle. Black with a beige head. Aromas are earthy, smooth coffee with mixed berries and dark chocolate. Creamy oak barrel with peppery alcohol and floral aspects. Spicy with nutty notes and plummy raisins. Earthy with light smokiness. Flavours are sweet raisins and dark berries with marzipan. Mellow coffee with dark chocolate and cola. Some lemon with Xmas pudding and light pine. Very good.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bouteille:Literally black, presumably clear, big creamy tanned head, sweet toasted malt, chocolate, caramel and dried fruits plus a tinge of vanilla and wood in the complex aroma; medium to solid sweet-bitter flavour, pretty full bodied and quite soft; lingering robust chocolatey, toasty and fruity finish with vanilla and molasses. A very, very pleasant Bier…

With grateful thanks to my learned off-sider, Bartlett. There’s just something about the bigger beers that I just fall for hook, line and sinker. This one is a good exemplar of Imperial Russian Stout with its inky body, coffee coloured head and aromas of Chocolate, cocoa nibs, coffee, licorice and dark oak. In the silky, oily body there were flavours of the same with caramel roastiness and a definite savoury licorice note. It sat on the palate and developed slowly, alternating between sweet, vegetal, savoury, bitter, sweet again and moreish. It was difficult to imagine anything I didn’t like about this beer.
