This abbey ale is a collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks, at the Abbey of New Clairvaux. Belgian inspired golden ales are noted for their devilish personalities, but there is nothing mischievous about this complex ale. It is brilliant golden and layered with notes of summery apple and pear and pepperv spice from the use of a traditional Belgian yeast strain. A portion of proceeds from this ale goes toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery 1931 and planned use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s, plans crumbled. these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Bottle: Golden pour with a large beige head. Nice aroma of spices, citrus, and yeast. Translates well to the flavor too. Good balance of spice and fruity bits, without being too fruity, and yeast. Nice little peppery kick. Good.

Looks and smells like a Duvel clone tastes like one too. Gold with huge rocky white head; pear and saaz aromas; stony dry finish. Nice but Duvel not suprisingly slightly better.

Bottle... Poured crystal clear pale golden with a thick fizzy white head. Must also mentioned the cork removed itself on its own once the cage was removed (which was expected from the warning attached). I noticed a lot of sweetness initially with this. With drying, highly attenuated yeast spices towards the finish. A little biscuity and cracker-like too. Resinous hops and black pepper spice with light fruits and other fruity esters.

750 c&c brought from SN by Liz. Pours golden with a 4 finger creamy white head. Aroma is mildly fruity and spicy. A little citrus hop. Med body. Recognizably Belgian. Trace of banana ester. Yeast. Spice. Light fruit. Citrus and a bit of grass. Mellow. Very nice.

Bottle shared by bhensonb. Pours golden with a large fluffy white head and a citrus aroma. There is a typical Belgian ale flavor, yeast-laden and fruity with a dry finish.

(750ml bottle) clear gold, lasting white head. Nose is herbal, golden raisin, spicy Belgian yeast, fresh and nicely aged hops. Taste of golden raisin, spicy, dry, really well done, drinkable, light white pepper, Different from duvel but similar and less hoppy. Really enjoyed it.

First off, within 30 seconds of taking off the cage, the cork popped itself off. Luckily, I was outside at a party when it happened. Pours a bright gold with a super thick white head. Aroma is bready with some honey and spicy yeast and a hint of spicy hops. Taste is strongly spicy with a hint of clove and hops. Full bodied with a creamy texture. Very fizzy carbonation and a very long finish. Overall, great. I have a feeling this one may explode if stored over time though.

750 ml corked and caged bottle. Pours slightly hazy golden under a huge off-white soapy head that takes its sweet time receding...dang, when will I be able to stick my nose in this thing? Ok, there we go. Aroma is strong in Belgian yeast, imparting clove, pepper, fruit (apples or pears), SweeTarts. Taste starts out lightly sweet and meaty before becoming a little tart and dry in the finish. Highly carbonated. Well made, but it’s no Duvel.

Bottle-thanks to Ibrew2or3 for this fine beer-pours hazy orange with a very soapy white head with various bubble sizes-this head doesnt go away!!!! very big nose-lots of fruits, phenols, spice (gop, corriander), and some lite grains (but not in the wet cardboard way). flavors are pretty matching to the nose-lots of phenolic spice, lite fruit and some lite alcohol heat, but not that detracting. pretty straight forward BSA that has alot of trippel character to it. nice work SN!!! I will buy more of this when i see it next!

750ml, caged and corked bottle. Had a warning on the cork - ’WARNING: CONTENTS UNDER HIGH PRESSURE. PLEASE OPEN WITH CARE’. They weren’t kidding...I opened this outside due to the warning, and it shot the cork 50+ feet away and gushed all over my deck. Gold color with a large sized white head. Aromas of yeast, bread, honey, and some fruitiness. Tastes of bread, cookie dough, honey, citrus, and some fruitiness.
