This abbey ale is a collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks, at the Abbey of New Clairvaux. Belgian inspired golden ales are noted for their devilish personalities, but there is nothing mischievous about this complex ale. It is brilliant golden and layered with notes of summery apple and pear and pepperv spice from the use of a traditional Belgian yeast strain. A portion of proceeds from this ale goes toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery 1931 and planned use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s, plans crumbled. these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Bottles at BCTC. Light orange with some sediment. Cloudy with a half finger head. Citrus honey but very weak on the nose. Taste is very weak straw honey notes but it’s drinkable. some spices just not to enjoyable. More of a wit than a saison.

Appearance: rich bright gold with a hint of haze, a thick white head slowly shrinking to a fat cap, and a very active bead. Aroma: fresh-baked white bread, with loads of spicy yeast notes, some honeyed grains, and some pear. Taste: cracker/biscuit notes immediately balanced by a tart bit of apple, pear, sweet green grapes, honey, clove, and white pepper. Finish: a yeasty zing slowly fades with a hint of lemony, bitter hops; there’s just a hint of alcohol. Notes: Phenomenal. Palate was full and creamy without being too slick. Alcohol was well hidden. Very nice.

HonkeyBra (3338) - Lemont, Illinois, USA - AUG 4, 2012
750ml bottle. Cork shoots off when you take of the cage, so watch out. Pours a bright golden color with a thick white head that settles into a medium white head. Aroma of bready dough, honey, spicy belgian yeast and mild hops. Flavor has strong bread and spicey belgian esters, mild clove, some bitterness. Nice, effervescent mouthfeel. Finishes with a touch of leafy herbal hops. Pretty good, as typical for the Ovila beers.

750ml bottle in a plastic cup. Pours cloudy copper/golden with a lacy, off-white head. Aroma of spicy yeast, caramel malts, and some floral and light citrusy hops. Flavor the same, with a good blend of everything. Average texture. A pretty good beer.

Sampled from a bottle at Whole Foods Market Charlottesville. Pours a clear golden color with a large pillowy head. Good head retention. Aroma of caramel, bread, butter, citrus and spice. The taste is citrus, bread, herbal and spice notes, apples and slight warmth. Light bodied, high carbonation, complex. A nice surprise.

Pours hazy and gold into the Duvel glass with a good sized white head (fading to an even layer of foam). Aroma is grassy overall with hints of dust, mushrooms, pepper, and sourdough bread. Flavor follows with grass and pepper initially, but there’s an earthy, slightly doughy malt presence, and other earth/hay qualities. Finishes with yeast qualities of mushroom and funk coming through. Slightly dry on the throat, not bitter, but the hops are noticed in the presence of more pepper and grass. Decent Duvel-esque beer. Medium-heavy, plenty of carbonation, always creamy and fluffy in mouthfeel. Very nice, well put together.

Pour out of bottle at the Denver Summer Brew Fest, hazy golden pour with white head, aroma brought notes of sweet white fruits, grape, some slight peach, hints of biscuit, bread and some spice and yeast notes as well. Taste is a nice mix of white fruits, honey, some slight vanilla in there going into a spicy, floral middle, some grass as well, finishing fairly sweet with a hint of pepper. Pretty decent, enjoying this series so far.

7/27/12. 750mL bottle sampled at a tasting at Grassroots. Hazy golden pour with a nice, fluffy off-white head. Spicy, yeasty aroma with touches of sweetness and pale malts. A hint of the alcohol shows through at much. Spicy, estery aspects that is surprisingly dry with a big bitter finish. I was surprised at the lack of sweetness and sugary aspects comparable to other traditional golden Belgians. Not bad.

Bottle. Pours a lightly hazed gold with a monstrously large white head that falls steadily but without much speed. Big spicy musky yeast on the nose, lemony and lively, bright citrus, old lemon candies. Medium bodied, subtle at the start, odd after the big bold nose. Lightly sweet after a moment, then picking up a bit of warm alcohol and a hefty chunk of yeast, lots of esters. Finishes warm, more yeast and hints of alcohol. Esters and warmth, light sweetness. Interesting.

On hand at Wynkoop’s United Tastes of Belgium 2012. Clear golden with a nice aroma of dusty pale malts and golden grains. Good flavor of some dusty peppery malts, golden grains, light fruity esters...kinda average now that I think of it.
