This abbey ale is a collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks, at the Abbey of New Clairvaux. Belgian inspired golden ales are noted for their devilish personalities, but there is nothing mischievous about this complex ale. It is brilliant golden and layered with notes of summery apple and pear and pepperv spice from the use of a traditional Belgian yeast strain. A portion of proceeds from this ale goes toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery 1931 and planned use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s, plans crumbled. these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Bottle at United Tastes of Belgium 2012. Pour is pale yellow with a small white head. Smell is lemon peel, biscuit, spicy yeast, and citrus. Taste is citrus, tropical fruits, yeast, bread, and clove with a slight alcoholic burn on the finish. Medium body with fizzy carbonation.

Sipped this one while listening to Steve Grossman telling us the tale of their relationship with the abbey and its 12th century Cistercian stone. Cloudy golden color, small white head. Aroma of dust, hay, straw, light spice. Taste is similar.

Sweet Hawaiian bread character, nice balanced hops. Light peppery notes in the end. Yes, better than Duval. (Rating 3400!)

Tap at Scion. Clear bright gold. Thick white foam. Thick lace. Belgian yeast nose with yellow apple. Estery and clove heavy. Taste is malty, yellow delicious apple, spicy backend. Slightly boozy, heavy peach. Not bad. Decent sweet side, yeast driven Belgian. Oily peach finish is very nice. Not too alcoholic like a full on Tripel that this tries to mimic. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours from the bomber a golden yellow with a less than persistent white head and no lacing. The aroma is yeast, grain, and hints of white fruit. The taste is initially Belgian yeast (bananas - bubblegum, then almost immediately, there is a crisp taste of white fruit (apples?) and grain. The finish is dry and there is a bit of a grainy aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium-light and very crisp. I really liked this beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
