This abbey ale is a collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks, at the Abbey of New Clairvaux. Belgian inspired golden ales are noted for their devilish personalities, but there is nothing mischievous about this complex ale. It is brilliant golden and layered with notes of summery apple and pear and pepperv spice from the use of a traditional Belgian yeast strain. A portion of proceeds from this ale goes toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery 1931 and planned use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s, plans crumbled. these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Pours from the bomber a golden yellow with a less than persistent white head and no lacing. The aroma is yeast, grain, and hints of white fruit. The taste is initially Belgian yeast (bananas - bubblegum, then almost immediately, there is a crisp taste of white fruit (apples?) and grain. The finish is dry and there is a bit of a grainy aftertaste. The mouthfeel is medium-light and very crisp. I really liked this beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From bottle at SIBF. Pale yellow, minimal head. crisp light ale aroma, dry yeasty ale, dry finish. Saison like. Clean, maybe too clean. Good

Comes out of the tap a beautiful, hazy honey-golden with a fairly thick ivory white head that leaves some generous lacing. Strong aroma is quite fruity, mainly pear and banana, with hints of malt and yeast. Superb flavor has a malty core and strong notes of yeast, fruit - again, banana and pear - and more than a hint of butterscotch. Smooth, firm body has plenty of fizz and life. A truly lip-smacking Belgian that is worth a hunt.

Pours a yellow gold color with a nice white head. Bready and yeasty with some pear on the nose, taste has some lemon bite as well with medium carbonation. This is good, but far from my favorite in this style.

Pours golden yellow with bubbly head. Nice effervescent and dry finish for a Belgian. Plenty of character on the palate, with orange rind, honey and lemon. Nice brew! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle at SIBF 2012. Clear yellow pour, with a small head. Yeasty white bread with some tropical fruit on the nose, which is very "meh." Flavor is boozy corn with some champagne. Not bad, but certainly not great -- the other Ovila efforts are quite a bit better.

Cloudy pale appearance. Fruity nose of pears, apples, and a mix of cotton candy. A refreshing taste of tart green apples blended with a mild sweetness. Very lively carbonation. A peppery aridity finish. I would get this again and I will. The best of the Ovilas so far.

750ml bottle, purchased at GCM, Gilbert, AZ. Pour is clear and golden, with nice white head and lots of carbonation. Aroma is fruity/spicy and malty, with Belgian yeast. Taste is bitter, with some malt and spices. Finish is refreshing and yeasty, with some bitterness at the end. I have not been a big fan of the three previous Ovila offerings, but this time, they hit it out of the park. Nice job.
