This abbey ale is a collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks, at the Abbey of New Clairvaux. Belgian inspired golden ales are noted for their devilish personalities, but there is nothing mischievous about this complex ale. It is brilliant golden and layered with notes of summery apple and pear and pepperv spice from the use of a traditional Belgian yeast strain. A portion of proceeds from this ale goes toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery 1931 and planned use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s, plans crumbled. these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

UPDATED: FEB 14, 2013 A very tasty Belgian golden ale with notes of pear and pepper. The alcohol content (8.5%) is well-masked. A nice golden color with a full white head.

750 ml. corked n’ caged bottle- Pours hazy golden with a huge three finger bone white head, that cork popped out without me even having to pull on it, massive pressure here. The aroma is very yeasty, banana, some pepper spice. The taste is very smooth, banana and yeast are in the forefront, creamy. The body is medium, carbonation is massive. Overall this was good, would have to compare with the authentic Belgian golden beers to see if it is better or worse, but I liked it.

Corked bottle and served in a Duvel snifter: Pours a clean golden hue with a frothy big head and good lace. The aroma is quite reminiscent of Duvel with plenty of pils malts, subdued fruity esters, peppery and herbal hops and moderate bubblegum and clove yeast esters. The taste is a tad more spicy than Duvel and not has crisp nor clean bittered. That said this still has a yummy combination of yeast notes and pale malts. The spicy and fruity notes do add layers of complexity. In fact I am pretty sure the yeast is taken from the Duvel strain. The mouth feel is sprite and refreshing but still has that alcohol kick and finishing dryness. Yep what you got here is very much a Duvel clone-ish brew and that ain’t so bad... but I would rather have the real thing.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy gold with a small frothy off white head leaving spotty lacing. The aroma is yeast banana and clove. Medium mouthfeel with a sweet fruity malt with pepper and spice and light dry finish. A good Belgian strong ale from Sierra Nevada.

Clear orange/golden layered color with fizzy white foam. Banana, light fruits, dry spice, peppery aromas. Light frothy mouthfeel. Dusty pale malt, dry spice flavors with lightly sweet melon fruit, tropical fruits. peppery, dry spicy finish--good.

Bottle. Cork rises forcefully as I hold it back; no means no. Pours lightly hazy gold to orange with a large, frothy white head, medium retention with light lacing. Aroma is light fruity esters, Pils malt, cellar notes and spicy hops. Flavor is malt forward with light hops and bitterness, sugars, fruity esters and a dry finish. Medium to full body with medium carbonation.

750ml corked bottle pours a golden color with a big bubbly white head that settles quickly leaving little lacing on the glass. Aroma is light fruits (peaches?) with some spice, yeast and grains. Taste is slightly peppery with some fruit and malty sweetness and a spicy hop bitterness and a yeasty dry finish. Medium bodied with abundant carbonation leaving the palate all tingly. A well done Belgian ale sure to satisfy most beer connoisseurs.

Smooth yeasty and sweet malt aroma. Deep golden with a big frothy white head. Balanced but towards the sweet with floral hops, yeast, and light citrus flavors. Medium full with a strong carbonation and relatively quick sweet finish.

Beer pours a yellowish wheat beer color, with a huge white head that sticks around for a while. The flavor is mostly carbonation and sweet floral notes. Besides that the only thing of mention about this beer is that the alcohol is hidden very well. Apparently this is an 8% beer. Could have fooled me. Finally, it’s a much more carbonated belgian than I am used to, which might be due tot he Sierra Nevada Collaboration. Sort of like a mild belgian with a heavy pale ale style carbonation.

750mL bottle. Poured near-clear medium golden with a well-retained, tight-bubbled white head. The aroma picked up cloves, white pepper, and sweet floral notes over honeysuckle and crusty bread.. a hint of melon right on the back of the nose.. warm, somehow airy combination.. very good! The flavor opened with sharp carbonation and black pepper, with pear and honey sugars following.. bracing carbonation the whole way through.. floral notes, cloves, fruit skins, and more pepper around.. finished with a lot of spice and just enough bready sweetness to keep it afloat. Medium-bodied but very filling on the palate due to huge carbonation.. tangy and engaging at times.. a lot going on, but it felt clean and calculated.. I’d drink it again.
