COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This dark rich ale is incredibly complex. Notes of dark fruit, caramelized sugar, toffee, raisins, and black pepper play against a sweet vanilla flavor from the oak and a round satiny finish from the hint of brandy left in the wood.

Tap at Sierra Nevada Torpedo Room, Berkeley. Colour is deep dark brown with very small white head. Aromas and flavours: Dark fruits, plums, some spices, Belgian yeast and malts. Has some elements of red wine, very soft and gentle. Totally fabulous.

Tap @ The BeerMongers... Poured dark brownish/mahogany with a thin head. Notes of ripe fruits, prunes and raisins along with oak on the nose. The characters in the aroma came through in the flavor. Soft mouthfeel. Carbonation was just right. Some sweetness, toffee, caramel, toasted malts. Wood and spirit booziness, along with deep fruity esters and Belgian yeast. A little acid came through but just a touch that hit the spot. This was delicious.

Caramel brown in color... Aroma of caramel, toffee, prunes, figs... Flavor is subdued by the wood, oak, notes of brandy sweetness... Plums and caramel sugar dominate the finish... Delicious ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle from the SN brewery in Chico. Deep garnet red with brownish edges and a thin tan head. Aromas of molasses, brown sugar and whiskey with a light estery component in the background. The aromas follow directly into the taste with a real depth of wood and whiskey that are distinct but perfectly integrated. Milk and dark chocolate with dry cocoa and vanilla follows this and more molasses sweetness. The alcohol is evident but not as a burn, more of a slow warmth that acts as a solvent for all the flavors here (and it doesn’t seem anywhere near 10% ABV). Not heavy bodied at all but it does have a creamy texture. Finishes light and dry with residual chocolate sweetness. Another killer Ovila variation!

Assuming this is the cognac one. Had it on draft. Notes of balsamic without the sourness, very deep and complex brew.

On tap. Very sweet nose of brandy, sherry, and a hint of bready malt. Dark, clear burgundy in appearance with a foamy head. Taste of brandy, raisins, hint of cloves, coriander, and sweet pastry finish. Light, refreshing body for a quad. Good brew.

Sampled at the Bistro 7th Annual Barrel Aged Festival on 11/10/2012. This abby quadruple pours a medium dark brown color from the tap. Medium sized white foamy head. The aroma is caramel, brown sugar, wood and vanilla. A medium to full bodied quad. The malts are fruity, caramel, toffee, brown sugar and sweet. The hops are herbal and earthy. Nice balance. Decent carbonation. Nice sipping beer. Very smooth. Hints of brandy with some alcohol. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

On tap at the pony bar in Hell's Kitchen. There isn't a lot there on the aroma. Some mild stone fruit and candi sugar. On the palate there's more complexity with apricots, raisins, root beer, and caramel. Tasty but not as complex as I'd hoped. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
