4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Very dark brownish; lacing, frothy tan head. Aroma of wood, dark fruit, cocoa, and toast. Taste is woody and moderately sweet (much easier to drink than most quads), with a touch of bitterness. Medium bodied; smooth carb; well masked alcohol despite a slight liquor flavor.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Very smooth quad in the true Belgian style. Nice fruity aroma. Carbonated like those from the Old Country. Fruit is abundant in the taste, along with an undercurrent of molasses and bourbon. Peppery finish. Splendid!

Bottle. Sick label. I’d love a hoodie with that monk on it--someone else suggested that, but I agree. Never go wrong with a hoodie--unless you live in Ecuador! Anyway. Poured into my newly acquired Westy 12 glass. Thanks Dave! I owe you beer! Pours dark mahogany with a small fast fading off white head. Nose is typical of the style--dark fruits, some raisin, plum, vanilla, light pepper. Flavor is similar--estery, caramel, dark fruits. Not much booze, but not a lot of complexity either. Just sorta there. I feel like they should have aged this in the same wine barrels used for the Dubbel. Those barrels are magic and did wonders on the dubs.

2.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
10 ounce sample on tap at Rubicon. The aroma is very vinous on this, with a lot of grape. Oak and mildly sweet aromas are also present. Just a lot of grape on this, for some reason. Transparent cola-colored body with a small, weak mocha-colored head. Starts super wine-like. Lightly tannic. Wood flavors follow. Finishes with a sweet, chewy flavor consisting of prunes and raisins. This is a bit weird. Undercarbonated, and way out of balance. Not a great experiment.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Almost black in color with a tan head. Nose of graham cracker, prune, dark fruit, wood, butter, and vanilla. A strong vinous, almost port-like character, intense brown sugar sweetness, molasses, and licorice, too. The flavor is quite sweet and sugary. Tons of brown sugar, prunes, molasses, licorice, and port. Mild vanilla, graham cracker, alcohol, roasted malt, wood, and a hint of butterscotch.

4.4 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Aromas of brandy, cherries, dry cider, and scents redolent of a Flemmish sour. Appearance is hazelnut with decently retaining, beige head. Tastes somewhat sweet, with some brown sugar flavors. Full bodied, smooth and velvety, with refreshing, fluffy carbonation.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at Dutch’s (1/11/13). Pours reddish brown in color with a medium sized creamy beige head. The aroma is buttery toffee, caramel, fruity, with lighter brandy notes and wood. The flavor has a larger brandy component, wood, caramel, toffee with less butter than the nose and some dark fruits. A mild peppery note is present. Pretty smooth.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
black, with a thick enough body to appreciate. The head is miraculously and.brilliantly white for such a black beer. Jungle feeeva! It smells intensely carmely like melting Brachs. The palate is milky and the flavor has a lot of other weak stuff going on under the caramel like plum, oat, and milky but weak cocoa and coffee. In sooner than no time to head has done the vanishing act and you’re far from done. Ce la vie. either way, its a bitchin’ beer and you don’t need all that other stuff.
