This dark rich ale is incredibly complex. Notes of dark fruit, caramelized sugar, toffee, raisins, and black pepper play against a sweet vanilla flavor from the oak and a round satiny finish from the hint of brandy left in the wood.

Aromas of brandy, cherries, dry cider, and scents redolent of a Flemmish sour. Appearance is hazelnut with decently retaining, beige head. Tastes somewhat sweet, with some brown sugar flavors. Full bodied, smooth and velvety, with refreshing, fluffy carbonation.

On tap at Milltown: Pours a soft rich burgundy and brown with a brief light tan head. Wonderful aroma, notes of fig and prune with raisin and a ton of other dark fruits. A touch of alcohol shows through along with wood and some brandy. Dark fruit dominates the flavor, very rich fig and prune with some barrel and alcohol warmth.

Bottle from the SN brewery in Chico. Deep garnet red with brownish edges and a thin tan head. Aromas of molasses, brown sugar and whiskey with a light estery component in the background. The aromas follow directly into the taste with a real depth of wood and whiskey that are distinct but perfectly integrated. Milk and dark chocolate with dry cocoa and vanilla follows this and more molasses sweetness. The alcohol is evident but not as a burn, more of a slow warmth that acts as a solvent for all the flavors here (and it doesn’t seem anywhere near 10% ABV). Not heavy bodied at all but it does have a creamy texture. Finishes light and dry with residual chocolate sweetness. Another killer Ovila variation!

Tap at The Davis Beer Shoppe. For some reason SN rep told them it was bourbon barrel. Lively and introspective discussion and tasting ensued. All agree it was very brandy. So: Pours very dark brown with a creamy beige head. Aroma of vinous dark fruits. Full bodied. Flavor is dark fruit, treacle, oak, vanilla and a definite brandy aspect. Very tasty ale.

Very smooth quad in the true Belgian style. Nice fruity aroma. Carbonated like those from the Old Country. Fruit is abundant in the taste, along with an undercurrent of molasses and bourbon. Peppery finish. Splendid! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
