COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Ovila Abbey Quad with plums is heady with aromas of caramel, rich malt, and dark fruit-balanced by the spiciness and delicate fruity notes of a traditional Belgian yeast. This beer features sugar plums grown on the grounds of the Abbey, and harvested by the monks in Vina. We hope you enjoy this collaboration ale.

Light head that dissipates quickly. Almost the color of a coffie shake. Pit fruit notes on the nose and a color similar to root beer. Light brown with rich red notes in the color. A little bitterness on the back. Kinda of like black coffee. Light carbonation.

Poured hazy chestnut brown with a small, thin tan head that was gone quickly. Pleasant aroma of nutty malt mixed with plum and a touch of yeast. Perhaps some caramel too. Full body with a mild thickness. Light boozy astringency in the finish. Nutty and caramel malt flavors mixed with plum and a touch of spice. Mild note of earthy yeast at the back. Very good.

Rich deep copper coloured body with brown, ruby and a muddy glow all visible. Aroma of pit fruits, caramelised sugars, alcohol and quite a bit of earthy malt noticeable. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong rich earthy malt flavours dominate, along with yeast, light spices and quite a bit of alcohol, all with some pit fruits (plums, naturally) sweetening up the finish. Aftertaste shows a lot of depth with sugars, alcohol and spices all noticeable, but the yeast and pit fruits give it some more depth. Overall, a nice quad, but not comparable in the slightest to the offerings from belgium. I sampled this 37,5 split bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Arlington (Clarendon), Virginia on 09-February-2014 for only US$3,99 sampled at home in Washington on the celebration of my fifth wedding anniversary on 09-August-2014.

375 ml corked and caged bottle purchased 15 months ago at Select Beer Store in Redondo Beach while waiting out traffic on the 405 returning to San Diego. Pours a dark brown color with a half-finger of quite fizzy tan foam. AROMA of candied fruit (cherry, plum), Belgian yeast, candi sugar, dry spice, lightly roasted malts, and buttery caramel. FLAVOR of sweet dark fruit (plums, raisins, dates), rich toffee, spicy Belgian yeast, molasses, and bready and toasted malts. Finishes with a nice level of sweetness. The quite spritzy carbonation for such a high ABV beer adds to the flavor and palate. The very high ABV is quite well concealed. Well-executed American quad! (311, 878)

Bottle: Clear deep brown red with light head and light lace. Caramel, roast malt, coffee, light fruit and slightly funky wet wheat. Raisined fruit. Dense but lacking the density for his style. Off dry, not sour, and medium high bitterness. Hot and lacking flesh and richness of the big Belgium ale styles.
