COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux, Ovila Abbey Quad brings the centuries-old monastery brewing tradition to America. Ovila Abbey Quad is rich and complex with layers of flavor including notes of intense dark fruits, and caramel-like maltiness. Rich and complex, this ale should be shared among friends in the true spirit of the season. A portion of the proceeds from this ale goes toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery in 1931 and planned to use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearstís plans crumbled, these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Iím currently rating every SN brew Iíve ever had in one clean sweep. I grew up on the classic SN Pale having it around during high school, and since have watched SN grow into a national representation of incredible craft beer. Living 45 mins away is a treat for the random growler fill. Keep up the amazing work and thanks!

A: (I will admit this tap was under carbonated) Dark Brown Reddish Hue, Passes No Light, No Head, No Lacing S: Dark Fruit, Raisins, Caramel, Toffee T: Dark Fruit, Raisins, Mild Caramel M: Poor Carbonation, Medium to Full Bodied, Sweet Overall, my beer was under carbonated but not the fault of the brewer. A good quad that wasnt boozy.

I like the label on this Old World-New World collaboration. Rich, compote and pumpernickel aroma. The taste is even better - stone fruits, dates, tobacco, anise, and prune. The finish is dry and mildly astringent. It is reasonably priced too, and a percentage of the proceeds are contributed to an abbey restoration project - I wish I had grabbed a couple more! This could be the best thing Iíve had from Sierra Nevada.

My Bottom Line :
Cherry-filled chocolates, soft caramel and dried figs meld in this diplomatic Quadrupel.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A slice of foam covers the dark brown.
-Alcohol is not as apparent as it can be in Quads (excellent!).
-Sweetness levels are kept in check too.
-The finish is compelling; long notes of chocolate, fruitiness and tobacco.

Bottle.

Brought over for a party, consumed by me: Pours mahogany with a creamy head. Aroma is a lot of raisin, some light hoppiness, prunineness, booziness, and yeast. Taste is somewhat sweet, but also a tad dry and winy at points. Loads of fruitiness is a given. Slight underlying bitterness. Easy to drink for the high gravity. Alcohol is generally well hidden enough.

Pours dark reddish brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, caramel, raisin, plums, alcohol and hint of chocolate. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light bitter with a long warm and fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

On tap at the Pizza Port Carlsbad brewpub. Itís a reddish dark brown beer with a small beige head. Lots of dried fruits on the nose, a little roasted hint, caramel and some alcohol hints. Lacks a bit on complexity, but very nice anyway. Raisins, prunes, caramel, some dark sugar and a touch of bitterness and alcohol in the flavor. Full body, lightly warming and with a silky carbonation. Lacking a little bit on complexity, but itís definitely a nice quad anyway. Like it. 130813

12.7 oz. bottle. Dark brown, short lived light khaki head, a little bit of lacing. Very earthy yet sweet to the nose. Dark fruit, figs, molasses, west coast hops, yeast and alcohol. Taste is really smooth. Silky texture, tamed hops paired with brown sugar plum and raisin with the Belgian yeast adding that spicy element and texture. This is my second one and it is amazing that a few months in the basement has really mellowed out the hops a bit and exposed the complexity of the malt. Really, really like this one.
