COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. and the monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux, Ovila Abbey Quad brings the centuries-old monastery brewing tradition to America. Ovila Abbey Quad is rich and complex with layers of flavor including notes of intense dark fruits, and caramel-like maltiness. Rich and complex, this ale should be shared among friends in the true spirit of the season. A portion of the proceeds from this ale goes toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Ovila chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery in 1931 and planned to use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s plans crumbled, these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

750ml bottle, swamp water pour with scant ivory head, rich aroma of prune, plum, rum, burnt sugar, cracklin, full, rich, and sweet with assertive carbonation, lots of plummy richness, finishes fairly dry, a very nice example of the style

On tap at growler bar. Black with a tan head. Sweet malt nose. Roasted malt caramel flavor. Strong notes of dried fruit, raisin or prune. Sweet overall. Not to boozy for the high ABV.

Black with frothy long lasting one finger tan head. Strong roasted malt aroma with a little coffee and earthiness. Powerful dark roasted flavor with strong alcohol. Has a somewhat of a Bourbon barrel flavor with dark fruits such prunes and raisins. A heavy palette; a bit thick and oily. Really enjoyable. I will get this again.

I had this into at the brewery in north Carolina. It was way too sweet for me, and I really like malty beers.

Bottle, corked and caged, from Happy’s Market, Ellensburg, WA
Cloudy darker shade of blond with small compact head. The aroma presents some bubblegum, banana, vegetables; and I’m not in the mood to forgive this un-Belgian idea. Smooth mouthfeel; indiscernible malt flavor, with little residual sweetness, vegetables, phenol, some spicy yeast, and topped with a hint of alcohol.
Glorious mess.
