COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co and the monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux, Ovila Abbey Saison brings the centuries-old monastery brewing tradition to America. Ovila Abbey Saison is complex and contemplative-but also refreshingly dry and drinkable. With earthy and spicy aromas, this rustic Saison has note of green grass and a faint citrus tang. The body is light and layered with fruit and spice accents and a dry, peppery finish. A portion of the proceedsfrom this ale go toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Oliva chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery in 1931 and planned to use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s plan crumbled, these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Bottle. Clear pale gold pour with abundant frothy white head. Aroma is slightly earthy, light hops, a touch of spice, saison yeast. Taste is light, crisp grain, light spicy yeastiness. Palate is well carbed and quite dry. Not an unbelievable sensorial experience, but a very solid beer, quite true to style by SN.

Caged and corked 750mL pours crystal clear gold with copper core and slightly frothy near white head. The aroma is a little apple flavored cotton candy that slides into some yeasty saison spices and a touch of funky yeastiness. The taste is similar but seemingly brighter with sweet apples and pear fruity ester notes and then picking up saison yeasty spices as well as a bit of bubble gum and clove. Decent enough.

Location: 750 ml bottle from Buy Rite, 10/16/12

Aroma: The nose is full of sweet Belgian yeast, with a good amount of spice, floral notes, and fruity notes
Appearance: It pours a lightly hazy orange color with a creamy, long lasting white head and medium lace
Flavor: The taste is well-balanced with a nice flow between the light sweetness, light spice, and mild bitterness
Palate: This one is medium bodied, it is fairly smooth feel, it works nicely on the mouth, and a has a clean finish
Overall Impression: Overall, I felt like this one was really just a solid example of the style. It really didn’t miss at all, all the aspects worked, and it was just a very very solid Saison overall. However, I still felt like something was lacking, it felt a little one-speed/one-note, and really, it just isn’t a complete hit.

Poured from a bottle into a tulip, the appearance is beautiful with a nice rich white head and light gold appearance, aroma is pepperand some yeast, the taste some tartness, a little spice and some bread, carbonation is on the low side of medium and the palate feels a little thin, residual mild bitterness and warth from alcohol is prominent at the end.

A great beer with lots of taste. A nice mix of fruity, citrus aromas mixed with some bitter flavors (peppery/lemon zest). A nice beer to enjoy on a hot summer day.

This corked and caged bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a head of all foam finely sized white colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a softly carbonated semi-hazy yellow colored body and a thick foamy lacing. The aroma was hoppy floral and musty. The semi-flat mouth feel was weakly tingly at the start and at the finish. The strong flavor contained notes of floral and malt. A decent one that I would consider drinking again. Nice for a Saision.

A hazed golden ale with a thick frothy off white head. In aroma, a nice smooth fruity malt with orange peels, coriander, classic. In mouth, a nice smooth sweet and fruity malt with nice curacao and berry notes. Tasted with GRM, Probstblueribbon and Ian, July 20 2012.
