COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A collaboration between Sierra Nevada Brewing Co and the monks at the Abbey of New Clairvaux, Ovila Abbey Saison brings the centuries-old monastery brewing tradition to America. Ovila Abbey Saison is complex and contemplative-but also refreshingly dry and drinkable. With earthy and spicy aromas, this rustic Saison has note of green grass and a faint citrus tang. The body is light and layered with fruit and spice accents and a dry, peppery finish. A portion of the proceedsfrom this ale go toward the restoration of the historic Santa Maria de Oliva chapter house on the grounds of the Abbey of New Clairvaux. This medieval building stood for nearly eight centuries in Spain. William Randolph Hearst purchased the monastery in 1931 and planned to use the stones for a castle even grander than his famous San Simeon. Although Hearst’s plan crumbled, these historic stones will rise again in a California Cistercian abbey.

Rating from memory, but what I remember is a nice solid saison that doesn’t compare to the dupont I had right after. Just missing that nice belgian saison yeast aroma and pepper in the taste.

I would consider this only an average Saison. Has most of the common characteristics of most Saisons, but it just lacked something... good, but I expected better...

Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - 750 ml cage corked bottle. Pours a hazy medium orange with a sticky snow white head that leaves plenty of lacing. Aroma has some light spicy accents, a hint of baking bread and a touch of yeast. Flavor has a slight spicy bent to it with some grains of paradise, some pear-like fruitiness, a touch of baked bread with a yeasty background. Nice spritz to the mouthfeel. Always thought I had rated this.....confuse it with the other Ovila - glad I looked it up!

Sweet yeasty aroma with a little lemongrass funk. A bit flat and slight watery in the palate ( even though there is a nice inch if head). Some mild fruity tastes and not as sweet as the aroma suggests. Not much funk in the flavor either. Descent saison but not my favorite. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks Ido. C;ear deep golden to orange. Aroma of oranges, other fruits, mild spiciness, malt and honey notes. Sweetish flavor, yeasty, with malt, honey, fruits, some spiciness and a bit of alcohol in the finish. Medium-bodied.

Bottled 2011 A: pours a dirty grain colored ale with moderate haze and a three finger off white loose foam head. This falls rather quickly to a solid sheet of the same. No lace, wish there were. S: Yeast, pepper, citrus and a hint of funk. Maybe a bit of plastic like whiffs at the back end. Meh, par for the coarse IMO. T: The yeast is certainly the life blood of this one for me. The yeast is earthy and cloven - reminds me of Unibroue yeast, but toned WAY down (I hate Unibroue’s yeast). There is a decent bitter bite with some evident sweetness and wheaty flavors. Again, some plastic flavor at the back end. M: Medium bodied and sharply crisp with a dry finish. Here they hit the head nearly, prefer just the slightest resonance. O: Well, Ovila is O for 2. Not a bad beer, not an exceptional beer, not even particularly above average. Really middle of the road with this one. Serving type: bottle 08-23-2011

Wonderful light saison. Balances in all the right way, perfectly suited to my tastes. Pours a orange amber without a lot of head or lacing. Some floral aromas, Belgian yeast and lightly fermented fruit here. Abbey oranges integrate beautifully here. Finish equal parts light sweet and sour. Very nice beer - could drink this all night. Bottle.

On tap at Unos translucent amber with the great funk of a true barnyard ale. Light taste and easy finish.

I’m currently rating every SN brew I’ve ever had in one clean sweep. I grew up on the classic SN Pale having it around during high school, and since have watched SN grow into a national representation of incredible craft beer. Living 45 mins away is a treat for the random growler fill. Keep up the amazing work and thanks!
