Taste is spicy hops (some pine) that lingers and some malt. Pretty balanced compared to other american pale ales (where the hops run wild). I am not a big fan of american pale ales, but this is the best I have had (hop devil was a close second). | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Feb 7, 2010 bottle, pours light amber with a medium off white head. Strong grapefruit and grassy hop aroma. Flavor is rich malt and hay with a great dry finish of pine and spruce hops. Strange that it’s taken this long for me to rate this. This really is the A-typical pale ale in my eyes. Perfect balance of malt/hops, and the dry end makes this so drinkable it’s insane. thirdeye11 (979), Texas, USA

Nose of bready yeast, caramel, pine and citrus hops. Taste of earth and grapefruit oil hops along with some toasted crackers. The palate is perfectly carbonated, oily slick with a slightly bitter lingering finish. arrogantb (809), Denver, Colorado, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 7, 2010 12oz bottle of a classic beer which I poured into a standard pint glass. The color is a light orange yellow and clear. The head is a frothy white cloud. The smell is hoppy and I also detect a perfume quality. The taste is crisp and also has elements of perfume. Very balanced and the drinkability is awesome. I could easily put down a sixer.

| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 7, 2010 Poured from 12 oz bottle into nonic pint.
Appearance: Beautiful, golden, clear liquid with sparkling, bubbles that rise to a frothy head. The bubbles are continual. Some lacing.
Smell: Strong lemon and pungent pine needles.
Taste: Hop bitterness is quite noticeable up front. However, it’s a nice sort of bitterness that is not overwhelming. Following is a grapefruit/lemon freshness that is very pleasant. You can taste some malt sweetness towards then end of the quaff.
Mouthfeel: Extremely crisp. Has a very mouth-cleansing feel. Lots of biting carbonation that is expected in this style.
Drinkability: One of the most refreshing beers ever. Keep coming back for more! I’m not a hop-head and this beer has just the right amount. It’s bitter without being bitter. This is one I’ll be coming back to. All I can say is, "Very nice!" beerbill (2022), Laurel, New York, USA

It surprised me when I was reviewing my ratings that there were a number of popular Sierra Nevada beers that I have not rated yet. Most surprising is Pale Ale with over 2,500 ratings. I’ve had it, I’ve just never sat down and reviewed it. Sitting with a glass in front of me, this beer pours a clear gold tinted somewhat amber with a white head. Very pleasant hoppy aroma with considerable pine and grapefruit. The flavor is light caramel along with pine and grapefruit pith. The bitterness lingers on the tongue for about 15-20 seconds after the swallow. This is a very solid pale ale and a terrific beer for something with such wide distribution. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 6, 2010 12 oz bottle pours amber with little retaining off white head into a tumbler. Fragile hoppy aroma with lemon, tea, bready malts. Very similar taste: delicate hoppy profile with balancing bready malts, very lemon ice tea like. Frothy mouthfeel with a medium-high level of carbonation, light body. Very well balanced; highly drinkable and sessionable but it’s still just a typical pale in my opinion.
