4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: JUN 28, 2007 Sierra Nevada Pale Ale was my original standard against which I judged all other American Pales and IPAs. After they started filtering it, that changed. From the initial mildly bitter bite, which is well balanced with a slight maltiness, to the outstanding aromatic finishing, this beer is simply outstanding. I do miss the sediment of the old days, though....

Nice smell of hops. Very strong rich tasting hops, nice and bitter. Not too exciting, but a great APA.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: DEC 20, 2005 With the split into the draft and bottled versions, I am making a new rating. Bright orange body with a thin white head. The aroma is dark bread with a little bit of oranges and and vanilla. The taste is orange peels, bread crust and some spicy black pepper in the finish. Crisp and refreshing.

4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Probably the best Pale Ale brewed in the USA. I would classify it more as an IPA though.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Coppery amber color. White head that fades fast. Smell is citrusy hops over a base of caramel malt. Some grassy and piney hop aromas. Taste is grapefruit and dark brown sugar. Finishes sweet. Not as hoppy as I would have expected, but not bad.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: OCT 16, 2010 Pours a transparent light copper color with a fine 1.5 cm head that is very bubbly. This dissipates rather rapidly. Aroma is pleasant and of the cascade hops. Start is sweet to a point, then hopping up, only to finish rather smoothly. Palate is a little unbalanced. Other than that, another solid Sierra Nevada brew.(8/3/7/3/14)----& had this on tap at the brewery. This is the only place in the world where the bottle version is offered on tap. 8 ounce sample. Aroma has plenty of piney C-hops present along with mild orange citrus hints. Sweet maltiness backs this up. Floral notes are also apparent. This is nicely aromatic. Transparent dark golden/orange body with a small off-yellowish head present. Starts with herbal and floral light hop bitterness before this becomes a bit toasty in the middle. Finishes with some moderate piney C-hop flavors. Decent bitterness, and lightly metallic. Some mustiness is there as well.
