Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a delightful example of the classic pale ale style. It has a deep amber color and a exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. The fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor are the results of the generous use of the best Cascade hops.<P> Bottle Conditioned.

I have intentionally not rated this beer before. This will be my 100th rating and I figured I would use the opportunity to comment on what I feel is a grave injustice. So often these days you hear people disparage SNPA as being boring or not as big as it used to be. I think the problem lies not in this great beer, but in the "Imperialization" of craft brewing. Everything has to be bigger, hoppier, smoked or oaked or many turn their nose up at it. The mentality seems to be if it doesnít go to eleven it isnít worth drinking. While this bigger is better philosophy has produced some truly great beers it has also caused some great beers, like this one, to get marginalized. As I am typing this I look below at the top ratings for American Pale Ales and see a list of beers that are really examples of IPAs. How can SNPA not be among the top APAs? It invented the style for crying out loud! OK, rant over, SNPA really is a great beer from the mouthwatering citrus aroma, to the decidedly hoppy, but beautifully balanced flavor, it is a true classic. Could it have more of everything? Of course it could, but then it wouldnít be an APA

Bottle at Piccadilly, BodÝ. Has a clear orange color with an off-white head. Fruity but careful aroma grass, grapefruit and pale malt. The flavor is also very careful with grassy hops, bread, apricot and some pine. Has a slick mouth feel, medium body and a medium bitterness. This mustíve been an old bottle because I think this beer is expected to be more hoppy than this.

355ml bottle. Pours a clear amber colour with a small foamy white head. Aroma is orangey citrus, spices, caramel malt. Some bitter fruitiness in the flavour, with spices, orange peel, lots of hops. Very nice, refreshing beer.

Bottle from M&S. Wonderfully reliable pale ale. Aroma is full of classic US cascade, but the malt is there as well in a balanced ale. Colours of caramel. Long finish. Clear despite the bottle conditioning.

0,355 l bottle from Vinmonopolet. Copied from another scoresheet. The aroma is hoppy with fruit (citrus) notes and some pine (from the cascade?). The taste is hoppy with medium bitterness. A absolute favourite APA. I will always come back to this one. A great buy!

The first beer of my trip to the US of A! One of the original craft beers, so the perfect way to ease into the hardcore-hopped double and triple IPAs of the west coast. Easy drinking and well balanced, not one to knock you off your feet but a reliable and dependable brew. A reminder to commercial and homebrewers alike that sometimes simplicity is what works best

Pours a dark golden orange color with copper/tangerine edges and a one finger, frothy white head that quickly settles into a thick, lasting ring. Streaks of lace left behind. Earthy floral hop aroma with some grassy, resinous pine and subtle citrus countered by bread/yeast and pale malt sweetness. A touch of grapefruit and citrus peel followed by some caramel malt and toffee. Surprisingly full bodied for the style with a blast of dank, sticky hops giving off strong dry bitterness that lingers over the yeast and sweet malt notes into a dry finish. Hop flavor is a bit one dimensional with bitter earthy character. Lots of grass, pine needle and spruce tip with very little of the citrus/tropical fruit notes found in the nose. Itís there providing subtle sweetness but is overpowered by bitterness and strong malt flavors. Hop bitterness is countered by bready yeast and malt sweetness. Lots of caramel, bread, toffee and nut. Well balanced with some nice hop flavor but itís not really light or easy drinking and doesnít really feel like a pale ale.

Golden appearance with some head. Tastes of hops, krokan and floral caramel. Medium creamy body, little carbonation and a nice hoppy aftertaste. Smooth and refreshing
