Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is a delightful example of the classic pale ale style. It has a deep amber color and a exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. The fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor are the results of the generous use of the best Cascade hops.<P> Bottle Conditioned.

I have intentionally not rated this beer before. This will be my 100th rating and I figured I would use the opportunity to comment on what I feel is a grave injustice. So often these days you hear people disparage SNPA as being boring or not as big as it used to be. I think the problem lies not in this great beer, but in the "Imperialization" of craft brewing. Everything has to be bigger, hoppier, smoked or oaked or many turn their nose up at it. The mentality seems to be if it doesn’t go to eleven it isn’t worth drinking. While this bigger is better philosophy has produced some truly great beers it has also caused some great beers, like this one, to get marginalized. As I am typing this I look below at the top ratings for American Pale Ales and see a list of beers that are really examples of IPAs. How can SNPA not be among the top APAs? It invented the style for crying out loud! OK, rant over, SNPA really is a great beer from the mouthwatering citrus aroma, to the decidedly hoppy, but beautifully balanced flavor, it is a true classic. Could it have more of everything? Of course it could, but then it wouldn’t be an APA

Pours golden clear with a small white head. The aromas are pine, resin and hops, and the taste is moderately sweet. Light mouthfeel, medium effervescent.

Bottle enjoyed at my parents house, great bbq beer. Golden amber color, moderate citrus hops with a bready caramel maltiness to back it up. Great brew, and I’m a bit surprised I haven’t rated this before.

355ml bottle from LCBO. 5.6% Alc./Vol. Pours a clear deep amber colour with a small white head which dissipates quickly. Floral aroma on the nose with notes of grapefruit and caramel. Taste is quite refreshing thanks to the citrusy cascade hops which leads to a spicy finish. Moderate carbonation. Im not a big Pale Ale fan but this one is the best Pale Ale I’ve ever tasted.

Astetta tummemman lagerin värinen, niukka vaahto. Tuoksussa ei oikein mitään. Kuivahko, katkerahko suutuntuma, samettisen vaahtoava, kirpeähkö. Ihan ok.

Brew_Cat (14) - Athens, GREECE - MAY 22, 2015
Bottle @ Pulp Pub, May 3rd, 2015. Average lasting off-white head, full body, clear amber color, very good lacing. Excellent combination of aromas and flavors, caramel, straw, flowery fragrance, notes of green apple, caramel, hints of butterscotch, bittersweet finish. Significantly balanced, with strong character, very refreshing. Top class example in its category!

My first American Pale Ale, and one of my favorites. On the hoppy side, so also an introduction to IPA’s for me, but not overwhelming.

Bright orange colour, watery head is quick to disappear, vigorous carbonation. Aroma of floral orange with oaky notes. The flavour is tangy, dry and slightly spicy. Very refreshing and a solid example of its style.

Bottle: Brilliant golden body with darker amber highlights. Hefty white head forms on top & simmers down slowly, decent lacing. Nose loaded with American hop aromas; leafy, earthy, lightly spicy, with a bit of citrus rind underneath. Small twinge of toasted cracker malts, baked bread, & yeast. Flavors of white peppery & ashy hop leaves, earthy floral notes, very light perfume, grapefruit rind, toasted grains, bread, biscuits, & a very small hint of sulfur near the finish. Relatively clean, medium-thin bodied, crisp. While there are many other beers I’d choose over this, it’s still a benchmark of the original style.
