3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Dark brown, almost black; large but rapidly dissipating off white head; aroma of roast malt, bitter coffee, hot chocolate; taste is roast malt; bitter; smooth; ok, if a bit one-dimensional; I could have murdered a bag of frazzles with this.

Sierra Nevada has established quite a reputation for making aggressive, West Coast style ales. While the brewery has certainly made a name for itself with hoppier brews, many of its darker beers are overlooked. Porter is one such underrated example. The brownish-black body is pitch-perfect and it acquires a lovely mahogany glow when held up to light. The tan head is sublime as well. Aroma is a little on the light side but you’ll be able to pick up pleasant toasted barley smells. To describe the flavor of this porter, Sierra Nevada uses the word "roasted" four times on the bottle’s labeling. It’s an apt descriptor, this ale does indeed have a rich bittersweet roastiness that points to coffee. Yet, it also features flavors of caramel, hazelnut, subtle vanilla, and spicy chocolate. Despite its complexity, Porter has a medium body and creamy (moderately sticky) mouthfeel. Given the price and availability, this brew deserves a lot more attention.

Pours dark brown, reddish hues on edges, thick of white half finger head. Aroma subdued roast, bready malt, caramel and toffee malt, slight earthy hops. Taste roast malt, slight stale coffee, bready malt caramel and toffee, very slight bittering. Mouthfeel medium body and carbonation, slight roast spiciness, slight dry finish. Overall good beer, within style, tasty and drinkable, nothing stands out.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Roasted coffee and dark chocolate notes highlight a medium body beer. Very slight cookie dough aftertaste. Been a while since I’ve had a good all around porter. There’s not much in my price range. 1,000 times better than the Sam Adams Holiday Porter (Granted, I have a much lower opinion of that than the general public), and significantly better than Yuengling’s macro style porter (Not its actual name). This hits all the right notes and is a good example of the style. Sold in 6-packs right next to the SN pale ale and torpedo at the same price, got it on sale for even less. What this isn’t is a very heavy beer that doubles all the ingredients and the booze and tries to be something that will warm you up after ice fishing in the arctic, with the complexity of a rubix cube (Well, those cubes seem complex to me, anyway...). Its just a nice basic sessionable porter with the tastes you’d look for in a porter that doesn’t feel watered down or like too many corners were cut. They also avoided the trap of hopping it up a ton just to follow trends that contradict the style. It won’t win porter of the year, but its the only widely available example of the style without obvious drawbacks that is in the Sam Adams/Sierra Nevada price range on down that I am aware of.

Botella de 33 cl en la Abadia. Leon agosto de 2013. Color marrón muy oscuro con reflejos rubí. Espuma beige poco persistente.
