elelwarren (134), SF Bay area, California, USA Jan 23, 2008 Probably the first craft brew I ever tasted, back in 1987 or so, and, boy, I had no idea what a great beer I was tasting. To me, the best porters combine the fruity bouquet of a good strong ale with the deep roastiness of a stout, then round it all out with some hops bitterness. Large tan head over ruby-tinted blackness. Aroma of cider, flavor long, with slight sweetness, and very pleasant deep roasted Sumatran coffee tones. The best part of this beer, though, is its creaminess, medium-low carbonation, and easy swallowing, with none of the sharp acidity present in many second rate porters. A smooth, classic brew!
SuperDave70 (929), Beautiful Sunny Mesa, Arizona, USA Dec 1, 2008 Dark brown pour with some ruby highlights and a lacy, creamy tan head. Chocolate, raisins, roasted malt and grain come through in the aroma. Flavor is mostly sweet and chocolaty. Light bodied. A touch of hop bitterness on the finish. Not bad at all. Svesse (1877), Hässelby, Sweden Nov 29, 2008 (Bottle, Akkurat, Stockholm 4 Nov 2008) Black colour with ruby hints when seen through light. Frothy, pale brown head. Malty, roasted nose with soft chocolate notes, dark fruit and raisins. Malty, roasted taste with chocolate, dark fruit, raisins and prunes. Distinct coffee bitterness in a balanced finish with a hint of wild berry sweetness. Nice and tasty brew. In short: roasted coffee and dark fruit. FrankJohansen (2876), Sabro, Denmark Nov 28, 2008 Bottle. Dark brown colour with a medium creamy head. Rich aroma and taste of roasted malts and chocolate. Smooth palate. PJClarke (50), London, Surrey, England Nov 27, 2008 Very dark brown body with a large-bubbled off white head that dissolves to cling to the glass and continue to bubble for a while. Creamy chocolate aroma with some hazlenutty characters. Roasted and chocolate malts come through with a slight metallic bite. Foamy in the mouth, feels good on the tongue. The finish is dry with breathy vodka notes. jimmack34 (158), Ohio, USA Nov 21, 2008 Bottle. Poured dark brown with smooth tan head. Smelled malty sweet with some roasted grains and chocolate. Tasted smokey deep coffee, nuts, grains, malty, some choclate, maybe some honey. Hints of hops, but very bitter. Slight medicinal taste, but not bad. Pretty good beer.
