Ruthless IPA is brewed with this rustic grain for refined flavors – combining the peppery spice of rye and the bright citrusy flavors of whole-cone hops to create a complex ale for the tumultuous transition to Spring.

I like this one...light of body, good hops, and the rye adds some complexity while balancing things out. Hops hit big up front and in to the palate, none on the finish. finish is clean and refreshing. Good addition to Sierra’s lineup because there isn’t anything close to it...fits nicely between pale ale and torpedo in regards to overal hoppiness.

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2012 Aroma is mostly spicy rye, with somewhat subdued grapefruity hops taking up the rear. Crystal clear reddish amber with an inch of light fluffy pillowy head. Taste is a good balance of rye spiciness and hoppy bitterness, with the citrusy hops taking a back seat again. Medium palate with prickly carbonation. Love the rye spice but I could use a little more hops personally. Overall a pretty solid malty IPA though.

Large beige head, good retention and decent lacing. Clear copper/amber appearence. Spicey nose, light pine and malts, lil sulphur, lil alcohol. Body is med/full, lil resiny, lil tangy. Spicey hop/rye flavors, light grainy, seedy. dry finish with a fair bite. Little fruity. 6er from statelineliquors.

Pours crystal clear caramel with a strong, doughy head. Aroma is very bready and spicy with some pine, resin, and citrus. Taste is the same; rye is very apparent. Body is medium, average carbonation, light mouthfeel, clean bready piney finish. Overall, ok.

Growler sample from shigadeyo. Poured clear dark copper color with an average off-white frothy head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate toasted rye and earhty aroma. Medium body with a dry slick texture and soft carbonation. Medium bitter flavor with a medium bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable brew.

Bottle. Dark red with lasting foamy white head. Aroma is citrus, pine and rye. Big rye taste, like rusks or rye bread. Citrusy hoppy finish.

Pours a rusty shade of burnt orange with a small to moderate white head that lasts a long time. Aroma is pretty grain-forward with lots of bread and spice with pungent hops showing their citrus and very "planty" sides. Flavor of bread, spice, pine, lemon, and plantiness (I don’t know how to explain that better). Finishes with plenty of bitterness and lingering flavors of grapefruit and earth. Medium bodied, easy to drink and plenty of flavor. A nice beer, but if Sierra Nevada suddenly made a shitty IPA around 6.6-7.2% abv, I’d be very very very surprised.

Not bad at all. Hell. Screw that. The best SN beer that I’ve had in awhile. Hoppy and delicious. Dry with good rye spice. Clean finish. Some good citrus. Excellent beer. Wish it were year round.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2013 Dark, clear, amber with a frothy off-white head that laces nicely. Somewhat mild aroma of toast, rye, pine and citrus. Toasty and rye malt flavored with a moderate late palate bitterness. Medium bodied and a little dry with a long bitter rye finish. Excellent beer; very drinkable with a session beer character despite the abv. Beautiful.

UPDATED: APR 6, 2012 Pours burnt orange copper with a little beige head. The smell is weird, slightly grain must and some funky cardboard with a bit of the familiar pale ale hop flair (and probably yeast too). The taste is better, earthy grain, peppery, orange citrus hoppy, some weed like herbal hint with a standard dry ipa finish. It goes down easy as do all their brews but this is not my favorite by them, it has grown on me a little from the first one I tried. Not something I could session but a nice change of pace.
