Ruthless IPA is brewed with this rustic grain for refined flavors – combining the peppery spice of rye and the bright citrusy flavors of whole-cone hops to create a complex ale for the tumultuous transition to Spring.

Pours a copper from a bottle. Nose is some piney hoppiness, some caramel. Flavor is not as pronounced as I would have hoped on the rye, just another IPA.

Nice spicy aroma. Ever so slightly hazy with a rich orange color. Resinous flavors and nice hoppiness combine to produce a bitter brew but overly so. Good carbonation and mouth feel levels. Though I am not partial to ryes in general, this one doesn’t over play the rye and it rates highly for it.

This is a sharply bitter brewski. Fans of bitter brews will love this one. Uh, that would be me. I am an expert on what I like. Seriously.

In bottiglia.

Bottle. Pours dark amber with a tight white head. Aroma of citrus, pine, rye and breadiness. Flavor was lightly bitter with caramel, rye, pine, bread, citrus and had some pepper spiciness.

12 oz bottle served in a pint glass. 2012 vintage (from notes). Pours a dark amber with a creamy tan head and visible carbonation. Ample sticky lacing left on the glass. Excellent carbonation level; medium body; semi-dry to dry finish. There’s plenty of spicy rye and hops in the nose, with a bit of toasted grain in the background. The aroma is also moderately fruity weedy, as well as very slightly earthy. Any lingering doubts about balance are laid to rest upon tasting: The flavor has an excellent balance of peppery rye, hops and toasted malt. The hops are a bit more spicy and less citrusy in tasting than smelling. O: Almost everything about this beer seems beyond criticism. The only thing I found slightly objectionable was the high amount of grapefruit rind bitterness in relation to hoppy flavor in the aftertaste. It looks great and has exactly the mouthfeel, aroma and taste one should expect in a true rye IPA. A great choice for IPA lovers who want something a bit out of the main stream.

A heavier aroma, roasted malts, caramel, maybe chocolate. A little bit of spice up front, not much. A floral and alcoholic finish.
