Pours a light copper color. Moderate off-white head with good retention and moderate lacing. Medium rye and herbal hops in the aroma. Flavor is mild caramel malt, grassy and piney hops and a moderate dose of rye. The spiciness of the rye and bitterness of the hops predominate--I would have liked a bit more malt for some sweetness and balance. This is a beer that couldn’t really decide what it wants to be--it needs more hops and rye to be a really aggressive rye IPA. Or it needs more caramel sweetness to be a more "mainstream" beer. Instead, they split the difference and the result, while good, is not as good as it could have been.

Not entirely sure this is a step up from their seasonal Glissade bock or not. It’s a nice rye ale, but it really lacks the hop aromas and flavors that are normally associated with a Sierra Nevada beer, which generally should have a showing of hops. A light earthy/musty character comes out at first, then some subtle grassy notes show up. Flavor is defenitely a showcase of the rye, with the spicy/tartness showing up loud and clear. The herbal/piney hops used also helps support the rye quite well. Overall, a nice beer at a good price. Not sure I would buy this on a regular basis over the SNPA as a regular drinker or not. But a nice beer to show what rye can do in the malt bill.

Lovely beer. Seemed like the Pale Ale on steroids. Lovely depth of flavour, great malt balance with nice piney, resiny hops coming through. Some citrus. Medium-low carbonation.

Great amber colour with thick golden brown head. Very slight aroma - rye with sweet fruity hops. Big flavour. An abundance of big fruity and citrus hops, rye present but hops are the dominant here. Quite sweet upfront but with a big bitter punch at the end. Thick syrupy density with an almost over the top carbonation, almost. Overall good but not great nor unique.
