An absolutely georgeous looking beer. Pours a deep transparent amber color with a massive three fingered creamy white head. Heavy lacing adorns the glassware and sticks thick. Add a gentle swirl of the glass and bam, another creamy layer appears. Lots of bubbles too.
A soft aroma of earthy hops combined with the spicey rye is dominate. Very faint smell of citrus fruit.
The flavor starts out big with an unmistakeable rye peppery taste followed by a hint of citrus in the middle and ending with a pine hop bite. Sweet caramel malt adds some sweetness but the rye flavor is pretty much in your face from start to finish.
This beer has a medium body with a creamy feel. I really dig the balance between the malt and hops. Finishes slightly dry with a pleasent bitter tingly feel.
Overall quite drinkable for my taste buds. I spent quite a bit of time drinking rye beer in the 90’s, so this kind of takes me back. The appearance was the real highlight for me.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20 jd543 (124) - SCOTLAND - MAY 23, 2013
Clear orange-amber-red colour with a foamy off-white head. Aroma is hoppy, citrus, lemon, light spicyness and a light caramel malt. Flavour is light sweet, with a moderate bitter undertone and a long bitter finish. Texture is creamy/thick/oily. Very drinkable beer.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Niall73 (43) - - MAY 20, 2013
2013 bottle, at home. Looks good - chestnut orange and clear with a good white head on it. On first pour there was a little skunkiness but it didn’t last long. It’s sweet smelling and earthy with a fruity, overripe edge to it with malt and hops. Full and quite foamy on the palate, juicy too. A really smooth taste initially - malt, fruit juice and citrus bitterness which isn’t overwhelming at all.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 madquacker (950) - Canberra ACT, AUSTRALIA - MAY 19, 2013
Brown colour with a small head. Deep and grainy. High ABV is very well disguised. Oily and some citrus across the malts. Nice.
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 WesKBob (563) - Bethany, Oklahoma, USA - MAY 17, 2013
Pours a light copper color. Moderate off-white head with good retention and moderate lacing. Medium rye and herbal hops in the aroma. Flavor is mild caramel malt, grassy and piney hops and a moderate dose of rye. The spiciness of the rye and bitterness of the hops predominate--I would have liked a bit more malt for some sweetness and balance. This is a beer that couldn’t really decide what it wants to be--it needs more hops and rye to be a really aggressive rye IPA. Or it needs more caramel sweetness to be a more "mainstream" beer. Instead, they split the difference and the result, while good, is not as good as it could have been.
4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 jebert (407) - Watertown, Wisconsin, USA - MAY 17, 2013
Pours a beautiful golden amber with a huge white head. Nose is citrus and hops. Very creamy on the palate, the taste is full of a fruity hops bouquet with a veiled malt backbone. Nice dry finish. This full bodied beer is best enjoyed with a deli sandwich, a dill pickle and chips.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 TheMaha (19) - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA - MAY 16, 2013
Another winner from Chico! Brisk aromas abound, complex hops, rye and light caramel malts. Tart, peppery, bitter, sweet and earthy, they’re all in there. The rye is glorious in the finish especially, but hops are resinous and leathery throughout. Grapefruit and pine it does go on..yeah I liked it! How this delight would pair with a variety of foods adds to it’s overall score! Buy a 12 at the nice price enjoy now and make sure you fridge a few for that perfectly tasty cookout this summer.
