hopscotch (4678), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Aug 19, 2002 This beer rocks.
The color, like most unfiltered wheat beers, is that of hooker piss with a yeast infection. Other than that, the aroma is very complex with hints of yeast, clove, banana and bubblegum. The flavor is very well balanced with a smooth as silk mouthfeel. The finish is dry and citrusy. Great Summer beer. goldtwins (3747), Nesconset, New York, USA Mar 22, 2006 Tap @ Summits Cumming. Very hazy yellow color with a white head. The aroma is sweet and yeasty with plenty of banana and some earthy notes. The flavor is light but dominated by yeasty esters of banana then lemon then the return of more banana toward the finish. Kind of dull carbonation. ClarkVV (3550), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Aug 20, 2006 Updated: Feb 23, 2007Draught pint at Redbones on 8/13/06.
Copper and strawberry blonde notes mix about in this not all that hazy liquid. I mean, it’s not filtered and clear, but it’s not overly cloudy either. Though I don’t see anyone else saying that, so maybe the keg had been sitting cold for too long. Whatever, it matters little. White head is one-finger high and recedes to partial-cover/ring but leaves a fair amount of lace.
Soft, mushy bananas are dabbed in bubble gum esters, while a very nutty, chewy, almost gummy wheat note is heavy in the background. Almost nothing in the hop department, and the yeast is nutty and rather bland. Not much crispness, and too much wheat heaviness. Not much carbonation running through the liquid. Doughy malts further bog down the aroma, which is medium in strength. Hmmm.
Heavily wheaty in flavor, with plenty of bland yeast. Sweet bubble gum, a touch of breadiness and then a peppery clove finish that battles with the wheat creaminess and bubble gum sweetness. Honestly, I’m not too sold on any of the three, the wheat being too heavy (though maybe a product of the low (relative to style) carbonation), the clove being too astringent/nutty and the bubble gum being too insipidly sweet.
Didnt finish the glass. Don’t know why we get the crystal wheat and this and not the pale bock and rauchbier. Oh well, it’s almost Harvest Ale and Octoberfest time...... Eyedrinkale (3115), Beer Town, New York, USA Jul 1, 2006 Draft at HDG. Cloudy yellow with a fluffy but short lived head. Taste is banana and bubblegum and too much on the sweet side. The malts are quality though with some spiciness brought in by the clove. Better than the Crystal though.
