COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
An old-style German hybrid ale, brewed using super-heated river stones to boil the sugary wort which encourages kettle caramelization and enhances malt complexity. Stein Alt is golden in color with an interesting toffee-like malt flavor, paired with fruity aromas and balanced by a moderate dose of whole-cone hops. Clean, complex, and amazingly drinkable.

Golden Orange, 2 finger The smell is fantastic. Really refreshing, a german aroma with dense munich and pils. Generously hopped without being overwhelming. the bitterness lingers after the sweetness fades. Has a little honey element to it. banana is here as well. really nice.

Draft sample at the source. The beer is a clear amber with a whtie head of foam. The aroma has nutty sweetness to it. Some caramel. Muted sweetness in the taste that dries out nicely. Low carbonation and medium body.

Sample rating (though I’ll be reconfirming my rating with a growler later this weekend; I should note that the hangtag of the growler says 5.3%, for the sake of argument). Pours a clear, bright yellow color; fine-bubbled white head with light retention and solid lacing. Very quiet nose with just a bit of brown sugar and some basic mineral bitterness; quiet. Medium body; lively carbonation; nicely crisp, mineral bitterness playing the key role here; quite pleasantly bitter; light, toasty maltiness underneath; very drinkable, non-resiny, rounded bitterness; tasty stuff. Medium finish of mineral bitterness and a light, lasting malt toastiness.

Tap at RNH. Pours a clear copper with a thin head. Aroma is nice toasty biscuity malts, light nuts, some chocolate ashy hint with herbal leafy hops. Flavor is a touch weak, light floral hops over light caramel and toffee malts, light burt toast, herbal and earthy but clean crisp finish. Ok.

Tap at RnH. As usual, SN nails the clean, easy drinking body in one of their lagers. This thing one is crisp, with a slightly distinctly German malt complexity, with notes of almond and herbs. Lovely body, with none of the usual veggie notes found in many German-style lagers. Good stuff.

On tap at Rattle n Hum during their Sierra Nevada event. Pours a clear orange with thin white head. Toast and caramel on the nose. Light caramel with some faint malt and graininess. Sweet malt and caramel. Spicy and earthy hop presence in the middle. Toast and malt spice on the finish. Nice and simple.

draft to sampler poured and amber/orange color with off white head. the nose is mild to medium malt base with a sweetness that could be burnt sugar or toffee something in that range. the flavor was more of the nose...medium malt base with that toffee sweetness. not a bad altbier it is drinkable but not a great one either. middle of the road and I am ok with that.

tap @ RnH - copper color. touch of adjunct grain, smooth bodied and sweet. Dry caramel malts. Good, but astringent finish. Clean and well balanced.
