Torpedo is an assertive American IPA deep reddish-gold in color, with a smooth and bready malt presence and over-the-top hop aromas. The beer has a solid bitterness and a massive hop flavor, yet remains easy drinking with a pleasant dry finish.

Bottle. Aroma is herbal hops, pine and citrus. Appearance is reddish golden with dark orange highlights and an inch of pillowy white head. Taste begins with resinous hops flavors and intense bitterness followed by orange citrus, pine and a little bit of toasted malt at the end. Mouthfeel is slightly creamy with medium carbonation and a dry, bitter finish. The overall flavor is aggressively bitter with lots of potent hops flavors and just enough malt to keep things balanced. Another fine offering from Sierra Nevada that will be making its way into my rotation.

Pours an orangey golden brown with plentiful tan head. Grassy vegetal aromas up front, with citrus peel and light caramel. Taste starts with substantial bitter herbal and earthy hops rounding out with a lightly sweet creaminess in the middle and a mildy tart citrus and spicy/floral finish. Medium to full body with paradoxically light texture, fine carbonation, and a dry finish. A lot drier and more elegant than other big IPAs Iíve had, which tend to be a lot more syrupy and sticky; not that thatís necessarily a bad thing but not always what you want. An interesting and well executed departure from the norm, my only beef is the aroma is fairly plain and subdued.

[355ml bottle, Appellation Wines Edinburgh] ĎA big American IPAí Ė is there any other kind? Pours with a long-lasting high foamy head, hazy deep orange colour, opaque, silty. Aromas are lovely Ė resinous piney smells drifting upwards, hop forward. Taste is amazing, sweet hops, pine and alcohol Ė more piney than citrus for me. A dry aftertaste with a lingering hoppiness on the palate. Feels very strong, certainly drinks to itís par of 7.2%, yet with that tremendous drinkability. Truly outstanding. [14062010]

12oz bottle in a shaker. Tastes a lot like the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, but a little hoppier, a little darker in color, and a little better.

This is a pretty solid IPA. Iím going out on a limb here and calling it a good session beer despite the high ABV. It has a good amount of hops and isnít ridiculously filling. Hoppy, floral flavor, light in appearance, and goes down smooth.

Enjoyed this beer from a tall glass while on vacation in OBX. The beer had a semi-cloudy rich amber-copper color with a large foamy and bubbly white head that had a lot of retention and modest cling. The beer had a strong grassy-grainy hops aroma with touches of citrus and pine, and some malt too. Its taste was just a touch sweet, but mostly a heavy bitter grainy taste. It was a dry, medium-bodied beer with average carbonation and very heavy on the palate.

UPDATED: SEP 25, 2011 Appearance: Poured a clear golden amber with a 1 finger white head. Excellent lacing throughout. Smell: Mild citrus with a hint of pine. Taste: Nice hoppy bitterness with a nice mix of citrus and pine. Nice bitter finish. Mouthfeel: Light-to-Medium bodied. Fairly dry finish. Drinkability: Very good drinkability, especially with the higher alcohol content. You could easily knock back several of these. Overall: Another very solid offering from Sierra Nevada. Iíll definitely be giving Torpedo Extra IPA another shot down the road.
