Sierra Nevada uses malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Two-row pale, crystal 40, chocolate and smoked malts give it a malty complexity. Challenger hops in the boil add balancing bitterness, while more Challengers and some Goldings give just enough hop flavor in the finish to balance all that malt.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a pint glass. Pours a clear dark brown color with ruby hints and a 3 finger soapy light tan head. Good lacing. Smell: Burnt malt with just a hint of caramel. Taste: Smoky roasted malt up front followed by sweet caramel in the middle and mildly bitter hops at the finish. Aftertaste is both smoky and bitter. Flavor, like the aroma, is a bit subdued. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a high amount of carbonation. Tingles a little on the tongue. Drinkability: Good drinkability. You could knock back a few of these without any trouble. Overall: Solid beer overall and a good representation of the style. Very solid choice for a crisp autumn day.

Pours red-brown with full frothy head. Aroma is caramel, molasses, brown sugar, toasted malts. Flavor incorporates similar notes with the addition of a slight nuttiness and baked bread. Light, dry hop finish. Average body and mouthfeel, even carbonation. Excellent for the style. Session beer all the way.

Tasted 8/31/10. 12oz bottle. 211 116 53. Filtered with a dark amber hue. Quickly dissipating layer of light khaki head. Aromas of toast and fudge with a maple sweetness. Medium bodied with a bright effervescence and crisp palate. Flavors of toast and medium roasted malts. Subtle smokiness mixed with an astringent and dry finish. Decent hop presence that lingers into the finish. Malt dominant, but the hops really add a nice dimension to the flavor and balance out the palate. Very nice!

2010 Vintage. Short 12oz bottle. Medium brown appearance, tall bellowing tan froth. Huge lace. Aroma of nutty brown barley malts. Faint touch of smoke and chocolate. Loads of fresh malted barley. Flavor has a good bit of chocolate malt with an English-style hop, earthy character. Finishes with a touch of a welcoming soil flavor.

Pours deep mahogany into a shaker. Mocha head with excellent retention recedes to coat surface. Smoked chocolate aromas. Crisp, sweet, dark caramel and chocolate upfront turning resinous and hoppy in the lasting smoky finish.

Bottle. Beautiful deep brown color with a medium light beige head. Roasted malt nose with notes of cocoa, nuts, and toffee. Medium body with good carbonation and a smooth mouth feel. Moderately sweet and toasted flavor, nicely balanced between subtle smokey malts, carob and caramel sweetness, and a grassy hops bitterness. Finishes with moderate earthy bitterness. Very nice brown and par for the course for SN, not over the top or groundbreaking but an extremely solid, highly drinkable, well crafted beer.

SN seems to have a bunch of new releases out lately. This here is an "autumn brown." Dry and peppery for the style. There is a nice wave of nutty, hoppy flavor along the palate. It has the malty aroma and flavor of a standard brown ale, but it is different from the norm. This is a successful interpretation of the style by Sierra Nevada.

On tap at hte brewery in Chico. Brown ale could be my new favourite beer. This one was perfectly malty and hopped.

Bottle. Pours clear dark amber with a 2 finger white head that left decent lacing. The nose is dark malts, roasted nuts and light chocolate. The taste is very similar with some spicy hops in the finish. Medium bodied. Tasty session brew.
