Sierra Nevada uses malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Two-row pale, crystal 40, chocolate and smoked malts give it a malty complexity. Challenger hops in the boil add balancing bitterness, while more Challengers and some Goldings give just enough hop flavor in the finish to balance all that malt.

Tap at Bier Stein, free for my buddy’s birthday. Deep brown pour with a small cap of beige foam. Big malt aroma: caramel, nuts, a little roast. Tastes of caramel, toffee, light roast and a hint of citrus all muddled together. A little disappointed in this one.

Pours medium brown with a tall, creamy, beige head that has great retention and becomes a little chunky as the pour resides. Aroma is sweet roasted nuts, roast, sweet cereal, much more smoke than expected, seems to lean toward the earthy/peaty side and some floral and planty hops. Flavor is toast, sweet cereal, roasted nuts, a touch of roast, smoke, leafy earth and light mineral notes. Palate is medium bodied, oily and somewhat creamy. Unfortunately there is a strange, stale grain (corn?) presence that lingers on, it’s still a tasty brew, but that linger really knocks it back a bit for me.

On tap from Sierra at Sierra. Really looking forward to seeing the anny fall seasonal take a hike. Pours murky brown but quite dark with dark brown head. Right off the bat some peatyness and smoke very light but enough to already make me love it. Very balanced offering goes down smooth with a toasty malt entry and flavorful finish. I think this one matches celebration as thier best seasonal.

lots of sweet malts with a bit of smoke and cherries, very nice brown color and modest head, plenty of flavor with just enough hops to help the finish but all about the malt

Beautiful dark brown color. Light smokey malt aroma with some dark fruit notes. Flavor has a very drinkable malt character not overly done. Light and suble fruit and syrup notes finish out this beer. I’m starting to like these brown ales more and more.

Purchased six pack from Cellar’s Wine & Spirits Shorewood, MN. Pours a semi-clear brownish amber colored brew with a thick off-white head that quickly dissipates to a thin film top and white ring. Aroma of roasted dark malt, floral hops, a hint of roasted nuts and very light chocolate malt. Taste is medium bodied, semi-sweet roated malt flavor with some floral hops and roasted nute. Finish has a nice balanced bitterness and malt aftertaste that turns into a semi-dry flavors after the finish. Solid Brown Ale overall.

medium brown with mild white head. nose of medium crystal malt. carbonation is far too high for the style guideline. mild bitterness before medium crystal malt and some chocolate without much roast and little flavor hops. a dry finish and the high carbonation gives this beer a rather insipid malt flavor and without much hop presence the brew ends up lacking in flavor. i imagine it would be an enjoyable effort if the carbonation was drastically decreased

Purchased a 6’er on S.N. reputation. What I got was a beer that is drinkable, but not distinguished in any appreciable way. Some nice flavors going on here. It’s okay for a lazy summer evening session.

12 oz bottle from Enniskillen and BevMo Salinas. Nose is wheat toast, toffee, and some coffee, but not really very strong aromawise. Clear red brown with a small beige head. Flavor is nutty, light bitterness, and toffee.

24oz bottle. Pours copper ruddy brown with thick light tan head. Earthy hops, some yeast, and smooth toffee malts in the aroma. Flavor starts malty crusty toasty with some spicy earthy hop flavor. Light sweetness towards back with touch of chocolate and soft nutty malts. Finish is bready with touch of chocolate and honey sweetness. Moderate balancing hop bitterness. Mouthfeel is crisp with touch of sharp carbonation and sticky sweet full body. Overall - sweet but balanced.
