Sierra Nevada uses malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Two-row pale, crystal 40, chocolate and smoked malts give it a malty complexity. Challenger hops in the boil add balancing bitterness, while more Challengers and some Goldings give just enough hop flavor in the finish to balance all that malt.

24 ounce bottle. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours a copper/brown color with about an inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both good. Aroma is brown sugar, caramel, toffee and toasted malt. The taste is similar to the aroma, but thereís the addition of some pine hops and a bit of nuts and smoke. Thereís also a slight lingering bitter finish. Mouthfeel/body is light/medium, itís a little bit creamy and has moderate carbonation. Drinkability is good, itís smooth and quite enjoyable. Itís an interesting brown ale, I certainly didnít expect the balance between the malt and hops in this brew, I thought for sure it would be maltier. Itís a pretty decent brew overall, and for $2.99 a bomber I think itís a good deal too. Iíd buy this again.

Bottled. Poured Brown, mild head, a bit watery. Malty and nutty aroma and pretty standard for a brown ale.

12 oz bottle from the Binnys Singles Rack (Orland Park, IL). Pours a roasty brownish copper, some glow to it, ligyht haze, a big khaki head sits atop and cakes, dies to a decent layer, laces ok. Aromas are some pretzels and light toastiness, some earthy malts paired with a touch of cocoa and bread. Simple, touch of floral hopping. A big vague. Initial is lighter bodied offering toasty malts and cocoa, some sweeter toffee, touch of vanilla, earthy tobbacco is light and provides a touch of smokiness, earthiness. Some bread, light toffee, light floral hops on the backend provide a touch of bitterness to this lighter yet toasty and malt forward brew. Not bad a bit forgettable though. Still, quite drinkable if not lighter fare. Would be great at 1% ABV less, I bet..

A nice reddish brown with a tan head. Toasted malts, caramel, light chocolate, some toffee, too. A little bit of hops on the finish. Smooth but with a little bit of carbonation on the tongue as it goes down. Real nice brown.

Bottle. Pours a lovely brown with a small light tan head that lingers and laces. Smells of malts and autumn leaves. Flavor is a bitter nuttiness, some roasted leafy notes, and finishes with a bitter bite.

2010 series marked 021111813. The pour is a rich mahogany brown with a full head about two inches thick and generous lacing. Robust malts, a weak toffee-like scent, and a slight fruitiness greet the nose. The taste has a sharp bitterness mixed in with the upfront roasted malts. But the bitterness is offset with a smooth creamy texture on the tongue. Nicely done.

12 bottle - courtesy of OfficerCockKnuckles (heh heh). Deep clear refractive chestnut, nice and bubbly with a solid creamy-fizzy tan head. Smells quite grassy, with background cocoa and further herbal and crushed nutshell bittering elements. Good taste - not very sweet at all (yay! better than most US browns then) - same elements as the aroma, plus plenty of grain. Rock-solid body, quite lively, and a surprisingly long bitter finish, with a hint of dry acidity; very good, but possibly hoppier than many would like.

On tap at Coleís. Lighter than some browns, with lotsa bubbles and a lingering head. All malt in the aroma. The flavour reveals that there is some complexity to the malt. There is nuttiness and toast, as there should be, but also some porter/stout qualities, such as milk chocolate, roast and smoke. A slight hioppy bitterness arrives in the finish. Very well done.

Bottle. Pours a mahogany brown with a lasting gray head. Aroma has notes of dark grains and bread with a hint of smokiness and molasses. Flavor is similar with a dark bread note that is complimented by a slight molasses note and a bit of smokiness in the finish.
