Pours hazy dark chestnut brown with a fat and foamy tan head. Aroma is bready malt with a touch of toast and yeast. Taste is roasted malts, a bit of cocoa and some mild backing bitterness that lasts into the aftertaste. A bit smoky. A nice brown ale with a touch of sourness.

Pours clear but dark brown with chestnut highlights, a rocky off white head and good lacing. Aroma of dark bread and cola with light floral smell. Taste has a bit of malt sweetness, toasted and roasted malt character, a bit of graininess, some herbal and citrus notes and mild bitterness. Finishes dry with mild bitterness. Light/medium body with moderate carbonation. Clean and well made.

Burly aroma of caramel and roasted malts are noticeable immediately. Pours a dark brown mahogany body with half inch of tan head. Bold flavors of molasses, charred wood, and nutty malts. Mild bitters through the finish. Nice medium bodied beer for the fall season.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
DATE TASTED: October 3, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Hop Devil nonick... OCCASION: a whole day in due to a cold rain--it calls for a brown ale... APPEARANCE: frothy, thick, two-finger off-white head that clings to the glass, producing attractive cloud-like lacing; body is dark amber and autumnal in color... AROMA: robust toasted malts mingle with soft cocoa to invite the first sip; definite caramel in strength; butter, lactic hints are present as well; some odd yeastiness... PALATE: lively and expressive--for a brown, audacious--and medium-bodied, making the beer sippable but significant; flavorful, lingering aftertaste... TASTE: surprisingly chocolaty at the start; smoky malts and earthy peat build a sweet, robust profile; the label suggests hops, but a blanketing maltiness allows only a faint window of that trademark West Coast spruce and citrus... OVERALL: as I remembered it from last year--formidable on its own, suitable pairing for the autumn weather --and a great part of the fall mix pack (though no Oktoberfest is disputable)... as browns go, demanding of attention and distinguished in it chocolate character...

Rich malty scent of stale coffee and chocolate milk. Dark ruby, not quite brown, clear with an off-white head. Taste much better than it smells (IMO). Interesting blend of malts with loads of cocoa and a hint of burnt toast. I wouldn’t say the hops "balance" the malts but it does somewhat tame them. Decent feel, carbonation lingers a bit in the mouth. Admittedly i’m not a huge Brown Ale fan but this isn’t bad.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
12oz bottle from variety pack. Pours a clear brown color with small tan colored head. Caramel malt aroma. Flavor is mostly roasty and sweet malt with a bit of smokiness. Just a touch of hoppiness to balance. Smooth mellow finish. Very good, especially among other brown ales.

3.2 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Fine coarse foam and lovely welcoming aroma of nuts. Rich roasted malt flavor with partial caramel and many shades of nuts. Refine hoppy end which retains the heavy notes malt in the beer, measured as a brown ale to be. A lovely autumn ale that tastes good.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle courtesy of Chris, who for some perverse reason gifted me with my unrated beers from the SN Fall pack as well as a vertical of Bigfoot, in exchange for the remainder of the disastrous Stone Stochasticity Smelt Like Elderberries that I rated earlier tonight. Thanks, Chris!
Dark brown pour with red tinting, fluffy and persistent tan head. Malty nose with the smoked malt making itself known. This is a rich full-bodied American brown, malt-driven but with an abundant metallic character from the hops. I guess I’m just not into American brown ales (I reserve judgement on their UK brethren until I’ve had a few more). This is perfectly well done, but not a beer I need to drink often (or even again, given the wealth of wonderful beer from SN and everyone else that I can find so easily in 2015.)
tl;dr summary Doesn’t change my view of brown ales.
