COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Sierra Nevada uses malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Two-row pale, crystal 40, chocolate and smoked malts give it a malty complexity. Challenger hops in the boil add balancing bitterness, while more Challengers and some Goldings give just enough hop flavor in the finish to balance all that malt.

Really great color, texture, balance of flavors, spice. Everything you want out of a brown ale is there, with an extra hint of spice and a reasonable level of sweetness to hop.

Brown to umber in color. Taller tan head. Pale to toasted malt with a toasted marshmallow background. Lightly sweet start Simple toasted malt along with a growing bitterness. A touch nutty. I donít get much depth out off this one. A decent brown ale, but not much more. Interesting that of the two brown ales tonight, I enjoyed the Brass Ass much more, my expectations were tilted the other way. 4/10

Pours a nice dark brown color. Aromas of chocolate/mild tobacco/coffee. Slightly bitter with hints of nuts/chocolate and maybe a touch of smoke. Excellent beer.

(bottle) clear, bright reddish amber colour with a small beige head; aroma of grain, cake; balanced, subdued flavour with a long, light bitter finish

Brown pour, head leaves a nice lace. Smells liek some rank hops and a bit of chocolate. Flavour is nice and palate is medium and super smooth. Mild and flavourful at the same time, toasty, well balanced, thirst quenching. Great beer, awesome example of brown ale.

A subdued aroma of malt, pours a clear brown color, a dry feel with a taste of malt and a chalky malt finish.

UPDATED: APR 11, 2016 Dark brown color, thin lace. Rich malt flavor, light flavor, with subtle backend. Ok, but not too exciting.

Draft. Faint coffee grounds aroma. Flavors of rich roasted cocoa, some vegetable stock and more chocolate on the finish. Wonderful!

355 ml bottle, in Nevada City. Reddish brown colour, off-white head. Malty and nutty aroma and flavour, with notes of burnt caramel. Moderate hops in the finish. Iím sorry, but brown ales like this one rarely make me ecstatic. This one is no exception, even though it is made by the capable brewers of Sierra Nevada. Nothing wrong with it, just not my favourite style.

Poured from a bottle. Delicious choice! Small head and little lacing, but creamy texture nonetheless. Terrific clear amber color. Nutty and sweet, interesting.

After a string of downright boring Brown Ales, Tumbler gave me just the kind of upper I needed to keeping seeking out the style. And this truly is a beautiful representation of the Brown Aleís potential. With elements of chocolate, smoke, nuts, toasted barley, subtle coffee, and some citrusy, mildly bitter hops, Tumbler is far from the watered-down levels that Brown Ales sometimes succumb to. This is a fall classic thatíll stick around for years to come.
