Sierra Nevada uses malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Two-row pale, crystal 40, chocolate and smoked malts give it a malty complexity. Challenger hops in the boil add balancing bitterness, while more Challengers and some Goldings give just enough hop flavor in the finish to balance all that malt.

Bottle. The pour was a medium to dark brown with a large (2-3 finger) foamy light brown head that had great retention an offered up some damn good lacing which clung to the glass rather nicely. The aroma was kind of mild of a roasted nutty malt, a resin hop and a sweet leathery yeast with notes of cocoa, toffee and roasted coffee. The taste was robustly malty with a hint of toffee and a little nutty at first then became moderately bitter and a tad acidic with a nice coffee note and a touch of chocolate at the end with the flavor sticking around for quite a long time. Mouthfeel was medium in body and creamy yet mildly dry in texture with a vibrant carbonation. Overall a Brown Ale that had a lot of flavor and an almost perfect balance of bitter and sweet.

Bottle from Fall Pack at local Smith’s. Sampled this on the heels of SN Oktoberfest. Dark brown color with distinctive white, albeit quickly dissipating head. Near porter-like chocolate and coffee, but mellower. Definitely not your typical nut brown. A typical SN cut above offering. I like it!

Poured into a shaker glass. Dark cola brown with a cream colored head. Aroma is roasty and chocolatey. Flavor matches the aroma and adds a nice smokey note. Medium bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and a lightly bitter finish. Very nice brown ale with a good blend of sweet, roast, and smoke.

Solid brown. Malt backbone with traces of hops. Good fall ale. In 2014 SN Fall mix pack. Once was regular seasonal offering until the vastly inferior flipside red came out. Needs to come back as a mainstay. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Cloudy dark brown color, minimal tan head. Nice caramel aroma, some roasted malt. Kind of watery. Medium body, soft carbonation. Not bad, but I have expected more from Sierra.
