Oakes (7030), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Mar 21, 2008 Hard Liver ’08
Golden-brown and bright. Boozy, fruity, calvados aromatics with brown sugar elements. Fat body. Lots of booze, hints of wood and vanilla, caramel, chocolate and toast. Big flavour, lots of fun. kp (6300), Woodstock, Georgia, USA Sep 1, 2007 Date: 12/01/2006
CaptainCougar (4687), Rockville, Maryland, USA Apr 15, 2007 On tap at the 10th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival: Pours a transparent copper orange with a well-lacing frothy white head. Sweet caramel, fresh hops, and bourbon oaky aroma. Starts sweet and viscous revealing lots of oaky complexity and bittering grapefruity hop flavor. A nice tweak on a good beer that hides its alcohol well despite being 12.3%. hopscotch (4678), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Oct 9, 2006 Draft... GABF ’06... Mostly clear golden ale with a mid-sized, creamy, khaki head. Excellent retention. Lightly grainy aroma with notes of honey, wood and vanilla. The flavor is a swirl of toffee, alcohol, oak and whiskey with moderate sweetness and medium bitterness. Full-bodied and creamy with lively carbonation. Lengthy, alcoholic, drying finish. JoeMcPhee (3899), Jackson Heights, New York, USA Apr 12, 2007 Tap at Blind Tiger. Hazy ruby coloured beer with a thin fine bead and low carbonation. The aroma is quite sweet and malty, light cherry and chewy sweet pale/crystal malt, light vanilla and a lot of bourbony sweetness. On the nose there is a lot of fresh Bigfoot aroma with just an accent of oak/bourbon character. The flavour is quite sweet up front however, with the combination of sweet chewy malts and bourbony oakiness countering this sweetness. There is also a young aggressive hoppiness trying to balance the sweetness off. The beer still seems a bit sticky and young however. On the finish there is an interplay of vanilla and sweet caramelly malt that is quite appealing. On balance, I’d say this is a good brew, but not as good as the original. I suspect a year or two will help it immensely.
