Oh she’s a dark beer, she is. Nearly non-existent tan head (might have been too gentle on the pour.) Nose of sweet maple, raisins and malt. Big taste of both sweetness with a bitterness closely following and then hanging around up in the aftertaste to balance things out. Flavours of burn malt, raisins, some hay. Carbonation is very crisp on the palate. Not a bad beer, but the harshness of the aftertaste is going to reduce points on this one.
Edit after 5 minutes...
Funny how we can be rather critical. After sipping this beer for a few minutes it smoothed out quite a bit. I’m going to up my score. And mention it has a nice molasses flavour to the aftertaste.

Diolch Joe McPhee. Deep chestnut pour with a large frothy tan head and clinging lace. Rich chocolate malt and toffee aroma. Lovely velvet texture with a chocolate malt, nutty flavour. Nice alcohol kick in the finish.

330ml bottle from the LCBO. Opaque brown-black with a huge fluffy tan/light brown lasting head. Nice appealing aroma - middling roast, alcohol, prune and fig, somewhat floral. Taste - simple, light on the roast, heavy on the dark fruit, not too tart, a little coffee and booze in the finish - nice. Slick, a little light-bodied, only mildly carbonated, finishes fairly quickly, leaves a nice fruity slightly earthy aftertaste. Nice - I would like a bit more body, but the light carbonation suits me just fine.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color ale with a nice dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with some black chocolate notes is quite pleasant. Taste is also dominated by some roasted malt with light dry coffee notes and some black chocolate notes. Body is quite full with nice creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Easily drinkable for the style with just enough complexity to be interesting.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
My Bottom Line:
Long dark chocolate malts whip up chocolate chip allusions as well as roasted bread crumbs in a slender and bitter vehicle.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the brown-edged black.
-Even though the finish is balanced out by hop bitterness, you can still stay this brew’s all about the malts.
-This is not as sweet as many NAmerican takes on the style.
-Alcohol was not a bother at all in the flavor profile.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
It pours dark ruby coloured almost opaque; the head is off-white and foamy. the aroma has notes of: toffee, biscuit, and toast. The taste is light sweet that finishes medium bitter; there are notes of: coffee, toffee, and chocolate. The palate is medium bodied, has light carbonation, and a long bitter finish. Overall, it’s meh.

Bottle from Cornelius. Pours dark brown with tan lacing. Massive chocolate caramel nose, really distinctive. Medium thick body, light bubbles, coffee and bitterness. Millionaires shortbread in a beer! Amazing!
