4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle from the LCBO. Pours a deep black with a thick tan head. The nose is awesome. Caramel and cocoa with a bit of soft smoked malt and a touch of saltiness. There is a little bit of plummy fruit character through the middle. Soft sweetness on the palate with some nice fudgey character. A little bit of soft cocoa with a nice light roastiness. Damn tasty beer.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
My Bottom Line:
Long dark chocolate malts whip up chocolate chip allusions as well as roasted bread crumbs in a slender and bitter vehicle.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the brown-edged black.
-Even though the finish is balanced out by hop bitterness, you can still stay this brew’s all about the malts.
-This is not as sweet as many NAmerican takes on the style.
-Alcohol was not a bother at all in the flavor profile.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle (BB 2015-10-07).
Head is initially large, creamy/frothy, brown, fully lasting.
Body is dark brown to black.
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, coffee), with light notes of alcohol, tar, minerals.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Light to medium body, watery texture, lively/soft carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Let it be known that I played Unleashed’s "Midvinterblot" album while rating/drinking this...the title track of course being a sequence of verses praying to Thor, Freyr, and lastly Odin, but in general it’s one of this Swedish death metal band’s best albums. I think this is the 2013 edition based on the BB date (and it appearing on the winter beer shelf with all the other new stuff at a Systembolaget in Stockholm in Dec). Is it worthy of the sacrificial winter blot festival? Not so much, but it’s not bad. Very roasty/coffee-ish in the nose, but surprisingly watery and thin in the mouth relative to its size. Expected/hoped for something more rich and satisfying, but it’s basically just a straightforward roasty stout with more alcohol in it.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
330ml bottle from the LCBO. Opaque brown-black with a huge fluffy tan/light brown lasting head. Nice appealing aroma - middling roast, alcohol, prune and fig, somewhat floral. Taste - simple, light on the roast, heavy on the dark fruit, not too tart, a little coffee and booze in the finish - nice. Slick, a little light-bodied, only mildly carbonated, finishes fairly quickly, leaves a nice fruity slightly earthy aftertaste. Nice - I would like a bit more body, but the light carbonation suits me just fine.
