MartinT (8262) - Montreal, Quebec, CANADA - APR 1, 2014
My Bottom Line:
Long dark chocolate malts whip up chocolate chip allusions as well as roasted bread crumbs in a slender and bitter vehicle.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam covers the brown-edged black.
-Even though the finish is balanced out by hop bitterness, you can still stay this brew’s all about the malts.
-This is not as sweet as many NAmerican takes on the style.
-Alcohol was not a bother at all in the flavor profile.

Bottle.

2014-09-30. Black body, nice brown head fades. 3+ Lightly fruity alcoholic dark malt, moderate roast malt. 7++ Flavour is similar, rich sweet dark malt character, fruity lightly tangy accents, notes of dusty cocoa. Light alcohol throughout is delicate considering how strong it is, moderately warming in the throat. Smooth medium to full bodied has light carbonation. Pretty nice. Bottle cellared close to a year, BB 2014-12-17, from the LCBO, Toronto

330mL bottle, pours black with a small tan head. Nose brings out notes of cocoa, a little roast, and almost some wintery spices. Flavour is similar, bringing out dark fruits, cocoa, and some slightly spicy notes a la Xmas spices. Not a typical porter by any means, with the wintery spices in there. Pretty well-balanced and unique. Good stuff.

Bottle, brought to me by Robbie. Dark brown with a low tan head. Aroma features prominent dark dried fruits, light soy, and a little alcohol. The palate is silky, low in carbo and medium bodied. Flavours of dried figs and dates dominate, with some bitter chocolate and a bit of roast. Fruit acids lighten the finish. Nice.

[6830-20140930] 330mL bottle. Roasted figs and toasted woody bread crusts aroma. Black body with a medium-lasting foamy tan head. Roasted figgy plum flavour has a nice soft boozy finish. Medium-full body. Good, the alcohol kind of sneaks around but it seems easy to drink at first. (8/3/8/4/15) 3.8

(Bottle) Black colour with lasting, rocky, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with coffee, dark chocolate, vanilla, dried fruit (figs, raisins), liquorice, black rye bread and hints of orange peel. Malty, roasted taste with notes of black coffee, dark chocolate, cacao, liquorice, black rye bread, dark fruit, some vanilla sweetness, hits of burnt sugar and a generous coffee bitterness in the finish. Almost full body, with a certain sweetness. Not quite as powerful as the stronger 2011 version, but a bit more balanced, actually in excellent balance. Lovely beer.

Bottle (BB 2015-10-07). Head is initially large, creamy/frothy, brown, fully lasting. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, coffee), with light notes of alcohol, tar, minerals. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively/soft carbonation, moderately alcoholic. Let it be known that I played Unleashed’s "Midvinterblot" album while rating/drinking this...the title track of course being a sequence of verses praying to Thor, Freyr, and lastly Odin, but in general it’s one of this Swedish death metal band’s best albums. I think this is the 2013 edition based on the BB date (and it appearing on the winter beer shelf with all the other new stuff at a Systembolaget in Stockholm in Dec). Is it worthy of the sacrificial winter blot festival? Not so much, but it’s not bad. Very roasty/coffee-ish in the nose, but surprisingly watery and thin in the mouth relative to its size. Expected/hoped for something more rich and satisfying, but it’s basically just a straightforward roasty stout with more alcohol in it.

[Bottle (330ml)] Pours a very dark brown with a large lasting frothy light-brown head and minimal lacing. Nice aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla and dark fruit. Flavour of roasted malt, vanilla, coffee and chocolate. Alcohol is well hidden. Medium bodied. Really good stuff.
