Schroppfy (1741), Ohio, USA May 28, 2002 Updated: Jun 27, 2003 Rerate: Had to tone my review down a bit, for two reasons. This beer is inconsistent. Sometimes hoppy, sometimes less. The malt is still fantastic, but has a touch of a problem (falling apart, getting overly sour) when too warm. Still excellent and highly recommended. I'm just lowering it 0.2.
Original: 2/21/02. Absolutely fantastic. The earthy malting in this beer is the best I have ever experienced, in any bock, scottish, or any other style, you name it. A deep and rich aroma that is, in my short experience, without parallel. I felt like I was rolling around in a barley field. I may be getting used to sweetness, but this seemed perfectly balanced. I didn't think any one aspect of this beer was done improperly. It may miss a particular kind of hop twang initially and in the middle, I guess. But the body is perfect, not too thin or bubbly, not at all thick or cloying. Slightly more body, less effervescence than the St. Feuillen Brune I had yesterday. I ordered only one, but I could have a thousand. Find this beer. Smell it. Love it.
thebeertourist (2005), Oslo, Norway Sep 20, 2008 From bottle at Creperie Bretonne, Louvain-la-Neuve. Cloudy amber with a persistent little head. Fruity aroma with hints of chocolate. Sweet fruit and milk chocolate flavours. Scores on originality, though I think milk chocolate is rather less refreshing on a hot summer’s day. Lubiere (3408), Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Sep 8, 2008 A hazy dark amber ale with a thin creamy off white head. Pleasant caramel malt aroma, with vanilla cream, oranges, and alcohol. In mouth, a good sweet malt with sustained herbal belgian hopping, coriander, and orange peels. Very nice. Bieropholie imports. BB 19/12/08. Jukkabro (2463), Tampere, Finland Aug 17, 2008 Coppery colored with medium sized yellow head. Chocolate dominates in berry aroma, some interesting raspberry comes up here too. Spices also present. Medium bodied. Flavor is drier with chocolate still here, same sweet berriness comes also up. Licorice even in drying and mildly alcoholic aftertaste. Good beer, interesting filtered one. BoBoChamp (804), Gent, Belgium Jul 22, 2008 33cl, from Geers Oostakker, complex brew, balanced, clear, small head, good brew
