3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
33 cl bottle. Dated 10/11/10, $4 at Binny’s, Nov ’10. Fizzy, fizzy pour, big head over a brownish-brassy body. Popping bubbles almost as noisy as Rice Krispies. Light malty smell with a hint of Belgian wheat or spice. Sips are effervescent as champagne. Taste is mild golden malts with a hint of roast. A little raspberry tart, but a happy, dry finish. I said happy, not hoppy, as there’s not a noticeable bitterness, at least that can be felt over the dryness. Tasty, well worth repeating.

2.7 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Bottle from John’s Grocery shelf, so it’s a shelf beer.
The beer it’s self pours a deep brown color with a decent head and good lacing on the glass.
The aroma is sweet & malty, s’got some metallic character... perhaps some black pepper... real odd.
The flavor is sweet, and spicy, and tart... it’s got that odd unfermented candi sugar flavor that you get from some of the darker colored faros. It’s got some sherry character, that I would normally count as a strike against a beer, but it just sort of works with everything else here.
Such a strange interpretation of the style.

UPDATED: NOV 4, 2013 Now I see why this style isn’t popular. Has a brown sugar quality but it’s not good. Really a disappointment.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20

3.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
11.2 oz bottle from Total Wine poured to tulip. Light brown with three fingers of foam with a careful pour. The head still is a finger thick 3/4 of the way through. Cookie like malts combine with tart, musty scent of yeast. Only faint hops.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Reading an article by Michael Jackson about saison’s I saw this one mentioned. This is one of those rare Belgian saison’s that predates the American–fuelled revival & interest in the style. Which sadly is far bigger than the interest in Belgium, not that many saison’s are being made in Belgium. American brewers make many times more saison’s than Belgian brewers do. Anyway… 25 cl. bottle @ home. Procured from Willems. BBF 30/04/2015. Pours reddish brown(?) amber with almost gone tanned head. Smell is a typical BE profile, very sweet, syrupy, slight molasses, syrupy dark fruits, very thick caramelized sugar and iron, it is pretty sweet smelling. Taste is very sweet iron, herbs, caramel, molasses, more bitter herbs, toffee, slight liquorish, more caramelized sugar & again iron in the finish, very sweet. Oily, sticky, slightly syrupy & less carb. Saison? What saison? This would be more aptly named Silly Dubbel & it is not a very good dubbel at that. Wow hope that this is not what saison’s used to taste like.

Licht buine kleur met een degelijk schuim. Ruikt zoetig en iets naar kersen. Smaakt erg zoet en kriek achtig. niet zo goed.

UPDATED: AUG 13, 2013 Pours an orange beer with a good white head. Smells pretty sweet and that is it. Tastes way too sweet. Not my kind of thing. Low carbo. Thin body and a sticky texture.

2.8 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20
Orange-amber with a white head. The aroma is grain and yeast. The flavor is more of the same, with some bland grain, yeast and grass notes. Medium mouthfeel and high carbonation.
