Bonus appearance point for the cool art deco label. Pours reddish copper, with a frothy head. Smells like grape juice, and pretty much tastes like it, too. Kind of artificial in a way.

Bottle: The aroma consists of light tart cherries, cola, caramel, and a hint of vinegar. It pours a dark orangish-brown with some transparency when held to the light. It has a large khaki head that has decent retention before eventually fading to a thick film. There is some heavy webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with light-moderate cola with a hint of caramel. The finish gets some light-moderate sweet cherry with just a touch of tartness. There is also some faint vinegar notes and oak/wood. It’s medium bodied with mild carbonation. Overall, it’s too light in the sour/tart and too heavy in the sweetness for my Sour Brown preferences. It’s certainly not bad...just not what I want when I’m looking for this style.

Type: 11.2-oz. bottle Glass: Westvleteren XII glass From: Albertson’s in Alpine, Calif. Price: $1.67 ($9.99 for a mix 6-pack) Purchased: Sept. 30, 2014 Consumed: Oct. 1, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a dark auburn, mahogany color with one finger of khaki, gray head, which dissipated fairly quickly. Light spots of sporadic lacing along the sides of the glass. Below average retention. (Sight - 3.95) Smelled sour fruits up front in sour apple, plum, kiwi, grapes, faint cherry and raspberry. Altogether not as potent as I anticipated. (Smell - 3.64) Tasted similar to the nose, although I was hoping for something better. Got sour apple, sour plum, raspberry, black cherry, caramel and purple grape juice. (Taste - 3.66) Light-to-medium body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Somewhat bitter, but mostly long astringent finish. (Feel - 3.79) I was expecting a bit more, but this was decent nonetheless. Especially for the price. I guess I’d have it again. (Overall - 3.70) 3.69 83 B

"Not sure what exactly they were going for it, but it didn’t really work. Muddled malts and only slight hints at anything sour in the aroma or flavor. Just a twinge of tart really. slight lactic feel, but if you weren’t being told this was a sour, I’d say average belgian ale. Light fruit in there, but not much of anything wild or sour."

I was hoping, fingers crossed, that the reviews were wrong, that this was actually a really great sour, that maybe people just found it too intense (something I’d love in a sour), but, alas, the reviews were all correct. This is a watered down sour. Red body, kind of like a dark iced tea, not much head. Faint metallic tart aroma. Taste is a little sour, maybe some cranberry there, but basically if you take a Duchess and made a radler out of it...except instead of making it 50% soda, you did 50% water, then you’d have this. Still a half power Duchess is better than a lot of beers.
