2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20 GG (1980) - NorCal, California, USA - DEC 21, 2011500ml can -
First, a big thank you goes out to my buddy Brian for bringing me this back on his last trip to Romania. Those poor souls in Romania...ugh..some of the beers he’s brought back were good and others were just plain awful. This one was all that bad though. It suprised me with the level of hops that was found, with a bit of spicy hop note. The beer seemed overly attenuated, with a dry, chemical-like aftertaste. Almost no malt character, esp for a dunkel. Maybe the 7% comes from the extra sweetness that should be there? The beer looked like rusty rain water in my glass with a light tan frothy head.

Head: beige, medium, frothy, low to average retention. Colour: chestnut red-brown, clear.
Aroma: malt, caramel, hops, slight roast, some dark fruit as it warms up. Taste: sweet, caramel, hops and/or roasted bitterness. There’s some alcohol when you first taste it, but then it disappears (evaporates?).
Not bad.

The best dark beer you can get in Romania.
It is one if the best dark beers I tried, very close to Guinness, maybe even better depending on taste.

My favorite. It’s the most dinkable black beer in the world. I like it. This one beats Guiness and her brothers

Kitöltve nagyon szép, tiszta rubinvörös a cucc. A habja erőtlen, színe sárgás. Illata fügés és édes. Íze szintén édes, karamell és a végén masszív gyógyfüves keserűség. Kicsit tompa, döglött élesztős hatás. Figyelembe véve, hogy kommersz a cucc: iható.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 11/20 Oakes (10941) - Savusavu, FIJI ISLANDS - OCT 29, 2012
Light brown with no head. The aroma is caramel, maybe some nuts. The taste is sweet, with caramel. The body is thin, and the alcohol begins to seep through as it warms. Nowhere near as good as its competitor Ursus Black.

0,33l bottle as gift from Romania. Clear, reddish amber color with medium, off-white head. Caramel, grain and roasted malt odor. The aroma is the same. Light roasty, grainy aroma, but a sweet, butterscotch flavour dominates. I’m sure, that this beer contains pure caramel, not just caramel malt. It’s a bit industrial solution, but it works. Medim sweet taste followed by a sour-bitter malty flavour. Light spicy hops also appear in the background. Light to medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation. The aftertaste is a classic, roasted malty flavour without butterscotch. It’s a light-brown easy-drink beer. I couldn’t drink a big amount because of the sweetness, but a glass to start the night is perfect. It reminds me a bit to the German Bock beers, but cheaper and not that qualitative.

Bottle. Clear light brown pour with an off white head. Sweet malty aromas. Good carbonation with a decent body. A little bland with sweet malt, light corn and cereal notes. A nice session beer for relaxin on the Black Sea.....
