Bottle compliments of Indiana Red: Dark black, tan head, nice lacing. Nose of alcohol, astringent roast and light vegetal notes and some sharp coffee and bitter chocolate. The flavor is mild, light body and some clean roast. Finishes light with some soy, vanilla and alcohol.

Ebony brown. Sturdy, albeit scattered, layer of tan foam. Soft roasted malt and vanilla infused caramel aromas. Lightly phenolic with a hint of espresso and lactose. Fine carbonation rests gently on the palate. Fairly oily. The body’s softness and fresh plum flavors immediately neutralize a large portion of the tingly, but subtle, acidity and keep it from totally weakening the overall structure. Snug notes of caramelized sugars offer support to the body just before rich and fluffy roast surges forth. Hints of nougat and airy wafer notes. Dab of soggy grains virtually deaden the gritty roast before it’s able to take foothold. As a result, it gains but the slightest amount of much-needed dryness. Whisper of citric hops. Body continually takes a turn for the worse, becoming mushier by the second, and the malts lose much of the intensity that they briefly possessed. At this point there’s absolutely no richness to be found. Finishes slightly chalky with a smoky roast element, but only scantly dry, with an elevating lactose quality and an unappealing tandem of phenols and bittersweet chocolate. Needs more dryness and focus as well as malt definition. Passable, but uninteresting.

Pours deep brown/black with small brown head. Aroma is metallic and sweet. Tastes of roasted malt with bitter chocolate with a sweet, dry finish. Thinner palate than I expected/. Good, but not great.

Pours like motor oil....nice and thick and black. Light brown head. Brown sugar and fig aroma. Very tasty...caramel tastes...chocolate...a little coffee....all the usual. Bitter finish. Very well done. I’ve liked Silver City’s beers enough to go find their brewpub I think.

Poured black with a medium sized quickly dissovling brown head. Brown oily legs. Aroma of dark fruits, roasted malt, chocolate, and light alcohol. Big roasty malt flavor. Fair amount of chocolate was also present. Large warming sensation with mild alcohol flavor on the finish. Medium bodied. Very nice.

GABF 2005 (I poured this one as a volunteer). Inky black pour, tan head. Roasty malt aroma and flavor. Chocolate. Smooth, nice bittering hops, smoke. Pretty good. But I’ve had a few some of the top ten, and they are better!

Mmm, very nice. This brewery couldn’t brew bad beer if they tried to -- thankfully they never will. Pours motor-oil black with a mocha head that leaves a nice lace down the glass. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, and just a hint of hops. Flavor is pure ImpStout. Chocolate/coffee/malt/dark fruits... only squared. Palate is think and creamy yet crisp; go figure. Nice mineral mouthfeel. It could have more of a bite to it, I guess, but it’s perfect for the brew. Overall, I really don’t know how this could be any better. This is a fantastic beer.

UPDATED: JUL 26, 2012 GABF 2005. Rich mocha coffee bean and light smoke in the nose. Milk and toffee/butter as well, somewhere deep in there. Good thick texture - rich and sweet with dark chocolate and coffee. Very good, but not as big as most in the style.

[At GABF 2004] A black beer with a disappearing brown head. The aroma is light, but contains notes of chocolate and coffee. The flavor is sweet with primary notes of chocolate, leading to a dry roasted end.
