segfault (74), Centennial, Colorado, USA Jan 3, 2006 GABF 2005 (I poured this one as a volunteer). Pour is amber w/ off-white head. Spicy hops, smooth toasty biscuit taste. Not bad.
dirt55 (65), Washington, USA Sep 27, 2008 Tap, poured nice amber with small white head, light hop aroma on nose, very clean (sometimes watery) taste with good hop aromatics and sweet alcohol flavor, very mild residual hops on palate, very drinkable...especially with brauts! Bier brauen (153), Bremerton, Washington, USA Jan 6, 2008 On tap during the Oktoberfest. For a Marzen, I thought it was a good representation. Copperish gold color, thin head. It had the nice yeasty, bready smell I’m drawn too by some lagers. Sweet, good mouthfeel, biscuity taste. I’ll have it again next year! benpickens (118), Port Orchard, Washington, USA Sep 17, 2006 Amber with very slight head, lots of lacing, and small amount of carbonation. Smells faintly of toffee and bread out of the oven. Sweet malt and crisp acidity greet the palate and they finish together with hops taking the edge. DarkElf (2681), La Jolla, California, USA Dec 28, 2005 (1 liter flip-top bottle: Obtained in trade with Larry Pitonka, thanks André!) Gadzooks, a 1-liter bottle and no one to share this with! Guess I’m only drinking one beer tonight, and with such a pretty (and large) bottle, I’m breakin’ out my pretty (and large) Duvel tulip glass. The beer pours a cloudy, dull orange-amber color and is capped by a bubbly, light tan head. The nose is lightly malty and sweet, a bit earthy, somewhat weedy and grassy, perhaps a bit musty, not bad, but not very interesting or aromatic. Flavor is more to my liking, though not what I expected from an Oktoberfest. A fair amount of moderately sweet, caramely malts are the dominant flavor up front, with a mild hop bitterness soon joining in the rest of the way. Unfortunately, late in the finish, a less than subtle flavor of buttered crackers comes out of nowhere to totally take over the flavor. Medium bodied, lightly carbonated, fairly easy on the palate. Head retention is average at best, fading to a patchy film and small ring. Overall, not a bad beer, even with the one glaring flaw, but it still doesn’t match up to some of the imported Oktoberfests I can buy.
