COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
I.P.A. India Pale Ale is a style from across the pond that came about when British brewers needed to find a way to send beer around the horn of Africa to British soldiers in India without having it go bad. Their solution was to use the natural preservative attributes of hops. Our version of this style is more of an American I.P.A., which means even more hops. Caramel malts give this beer a bit of sweetness to complement the floral and bitter flavors. ABV 6.5% IBU 73 2009 GOLD MEDAL NORTH AMERICAN BEER AWARDS 2009 GOLD MEDAL US Beer Championships

omhper (17466) - Stockholm, SWEDEN - MAR 6, 2012
Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Lightly hazy copper/brown colour, small head. Perfumy nose where pink grapefruit gradually is surpassed by caramel. Mid sweet with rounded mouthfeel and medium body. Caramel grows to dominate, complemented by milk chocolate and grapefruit. Mildly bitter finish. Quite pleasant, even if it less hop-centric than I anticipate from an American IPA.

Can. Pours a pale amber color with a small off-white head. Has a fruity malty hoppy caramel aroma. Sweetish malty hoppy caramel flavor. Has a sweetish malty hoppy finish.

Draught. This beer was amber. It had hops and butter on the nose and palate. Light bitterness for the style. I’m not a fan of this one, and apparently I’m not alone.

GABF 2010. Pours clear amber with a small, frothy cream colored head, low retention with light lacing. Aroma is average malt (caramel, toasted), heavy hops (floral, pine, citrus), and light esters (apple) with notes of alcohol. Flavor is average malt (caramel, toasted, meal), heavy hops (floral, pine, citrus), and light esters (apple/pear) with notes of peach. Medium body, carbonation, and creaminess, low warmth with a dry finish.

Bottle @ home. This was hidden in the back of the fridge of my parents fridge. Fairly clear, amber orange appearance with a tan head. Toasty caramel malty, earthy hoppy nose with some toffee notes. Somewhat bitter, earthy, organic hoppy, caramel, slightly toffee, chewy flavor. I realize that this isn’t exactly fresh but theres not a lot interesting going on here.

(Bottle, Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 5 April 2012) Amber colour with frothy, off-white head. Malty, fruity nose with notes of caramel, treacle-toffee and orange peel. Malty, fruity taste with caramel, toffee, orange peel, crisp-bread and a generous citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Well balanced and quite nice.

Beershine (5173) - The Sunshine State, Florida, USA - SEP 30, 2011
Draft @ Cortez beer fest. Orange-amber with thin cap. Rusty, old hop aroma. Smells boring but has a nice earthy, mushroom quality. A really earthy ipa, not bright at all. Almost dull. Goes with food, which brings out the fruity character that is otherwise hidden. Not bad, but certainly not characterful.

Picked up a bottle of this to fill out a mix-a-six because I ran out of other stuff that I actually wanted to try - after I saw the ratings, I realized my folly - oh well, time to suck it up - maybe it’s because I was expecting garbage, but this is not all that terrible - hazy amber - faint lace - very malt heavy in the nose - caramel, toffee, buttered toast - some earthiness in the form of damp leaves and soil - flavor is very malt forward as well - caramel and toasted bread - sticky malts and herbal, tea-like character - earthy hop flavor, but very low bitterness - finish is a bit harsh - okay, so maybe it is kind of bad, but not bad enough to keep me from drinking this whole damn bottle.
