Aroma: Smoke, smoke, smoke all over with a tiny bit of caramel Appearance: Pitch black with small head, average lasting and a bit of lacing. Taste: Also very smoky but warm and round because of it’s 8.6% alcohol. We can find a bit of caramel also but smoke is killing all other flavors. It’s name is telling everything. Massive smoke. Not my favorite.

Bottle. Deep brown-black pour with a thin tan head. The aroma is a little bit sweet and sticky. A roasted dark malt character along with a touch of sweet smokiness and some rich bittersweet chocolate character. There is a heavy earthy bitterness along with the roast and smoke. Great balance of soft roast and smoke with a soft cocoaish sweetness through the middle of the palate. Oily and rich and very tasty. I’m a fan.

341mL bottle, pours a dark brown / black with a thick, foamy tan head. Aroma is very massively smoky (duh), with some ashtray notes and a bit of bonfire. Flavour is intensely smoky as well, with lots of ashtray, firepit and cigarette butt. Extremely intense carbonation with destroys the drinkability even more, though the ABV is well-concealed. I suppose if you like this style, you’ll enjoy this, but this isn’t a success in my books.

November 24, 2011 - with blankboy, jerc and mabel. 341ml bottle. Clear but extremely deep refractive ruby-brown pour with decent diminishing fizzy/creamy tan head. Smoky aroma, a bit like Church Key Holy Smoke USED to be; campfire, cola syrup, maybe a touch of kerosene - simple (7-). Taste - no cola, a little herbal - mostly campfire and kerosene/lighter fluid ... not sweet, but I got just a little bit of chocolate milk in it - weird (7+). A little watery and undercarbonated, quite astringent, finishes quickly and leaves a sharp smoky aftertaste.

[bottle] Peat smoky aroma with faint dark malt character, including some dried fruit. Clear garnet under a thin, lasting, white ring. Bitter peat smoke flavour with a faint chocolate accent. Light body, moderate carbonation, slightly bitter finish.

I didn’t know this was a Smoked Ale until I cracked open the bottle, smelled it and drank it. Definitely smokey; has that campfire smell to it. Figs, prunes, nuts, and caramel join the smoke scent. The pour is a dark murky brown color with a ultra thin head on top with most of it fading away. The flavors are, again, smokey, with bacon, wood, maple, a little dark fruit, and caramel. Interesting. And pretty good too.

Bottle 341 ml. Dark brown with a medium long lasting light brown head and fair lacing. Nose of smoke, wood and slight notes of chocolate. Flavor is sweet with smoked malt, caramel and slight notes of chocolate. Smooth but long lasting smoked aftertaste. Alcohol really well hidden. A very good Smoked, but not in the same ballpark as Schlenkerla in term of complexity, balance and drinkability.

Bottle at craig’s. Dark brown with red highlights and a tan head. Smoke dominates the aroma, predicably, quite a nice smoke, not kippers, like a burning log. Taste is similar, little toffee. Bitter. Not bad
