3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle - 341ml. Pours an opaque black body with low carbonation and a thin beige foamy head. Strong, complex malty/hoppy aroma with caramel, smoky, and chocolate hints. Alcohol is well hidden. Its sharp, robust taste carries smoky, woody, and roasted coffee notes. Ends with a long, warming bitter/roasty finish. Well done.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottled sample via and shared with oakbluff. Dark brown in colour with moderate carbonation. Aromas are of woodsmoke, salty molasses, and creosote. Lots of smoke in the mouth, backed by notes of caramel, wood, pale malt, and ash. Medium bodied with a fairly long finish. Seems a bit less refined than its predecessor Grand Chef, but still a nice smoke filled beverage.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
341ml bottle from Metro Sabrevois.
Appearance : Deep brown with a small creamy brown head. No lacing.
Aroma : Nice woody smoke. Notes of liquorice and caramel/maple syrup. Very woody. Nice !
Taste : Roasted malt and light smoke. Woody finish with some caramel and molasses. Finish dry and a bit warm. Light bitterness too. Notes of chocolate on the finish. Some coffee too. Light notes of ashes on the finish.
Overall : Great aroma. I like the woody type smoke better than the smoked ham of bacon type. Not too smoky. Nice sweetness on the nose mixed with the smoke. Very nice beer. Quite drinkable with a soft carbonation.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Acquired in a trade with SlovakSniper. Thanks Pat. Almost black with a short-lived brown head. The aroma is roast and smoke, with a little burnt caramel. The flavour is wood smoke, bitter green herbs, and a little chocolate to round it off. The smoke fades, and a little stewed pear joins as the beer warms. These things generally aren’t terribly complex, are they? But this one’s not bad.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
341 ml bottle purchased at Peluso (Montreal), on December 19, 2010. Dark brown, very little head. Smoked malt aroma, with notes of caramel and maple sweetness. Taste of smoked malted barley, sweet chocolate notes, some bitter smocked dark chocolate aftertaste. A very good smoked porter, but like all others Simple Malt beers, not as good as the Bièropholie version!

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle. Very dark brown red with an average foamy mocha head with average retention. Aroma is smoke, wood, peat, alcohol, roasted malt, nuts and a hint of vanilla. Flavor is sweet roasted malt, smoke, wood, herbal notes and a long warm alcohol finish with some coffee. Full body, moderate carbonation and syrupy mouthfeel. Very good.

4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Sample courtesy of jcwattsrugger. Pours dark caramel brown with thin white head. The aroma is full smokiness mixing with rich sweet malts and chocolate creating a cool deep rich sweet smokiness with smoldering oak and cedar around the edges. The taste is rich with sweet malts, some rich dark fruity esters, a touch of dark roasted malts, some chocolate and plenty of smoky goodness. It ends with lingering nectar sweet malts and some lingering smoke. Full rich yummy brew.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
trade with Fred82-THANKS!-341 ml bottle-pours a tan head that reduces to a ring with dark brown color. Aroma is smoke, medium/dark malt, some band aid pheynols. Taste is smoke, medium/dark malt, 2nd earthy hops and some band aid pheynols still come through. Medium body. Even with the one drawback, an enjoyable beer.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
My Bottom Line:
Wooden smoke and licorice-like fruitiness delve into molasses and dry roastiness for an elegant, strong smoked ale.
Further Personal Perceptions:
-A sheet of foam recedes to a ring atop the ebony.
-The smoke is prominent, while never reaching levels of the Schlenkerlas of this world. This is also not as smoky as the Bièropholie Calumet Grand Chef, for example.
-Not much complexity is gotten from the malts (light caramel, no chocolate), apart from the smokiness, of course.
-This is not your typical Imperial Porter or Imperial Stout base brewed with some smoked malts. This is a creature all its own.
-Alcohol is masterfully hidden.
-The body is substantial while never being too sweet.
-This is clearly not the same recipe as the Bièropholie Calumet Grand Chef...
