COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION

Note from the brewer: this is not made to be an American Strong Ale or anything else. It’s made to be a kind of barley-based port-like brew with very little carbonation, just enough to protect it against oxydation.

Very cool. Is this what Sam Adams was going for with Triple Bock? Dark brown and atill. Like a smooth Old Ale with a nice alcohol warmth. Malt malt and malt. A nice sipper.

I’m a little confused by the fact that the label classifies this as a "strong malt liquor", but it’s in the "fruit beer/radler" category. There’s no mention on the label of this actually being made with fruit, although it’s definitely fruity as hell. At the same time, it strikes me as being waaaay too refined to fall into the degenerative paper bag malt liquor category. Pour is a heavy, thick, dark, dark brown with the merest hint of carbonation and head. Nose is a delicious stone fruit bouquet: cherries, dates, prunes, raisins and grape juice; dark caramel, brown sugar, molasses, honey, faint woodsmoke and surprisingly subtle whiffs of alcohol. This stuff smells damned delicious. Taste-wise it’s like this awesome port-light. It’s sweet and syrupy, tons of steeped fruit and caramel, leading into a dry finish with just enough alcohol and hop bitterness to make this really palatable. Definitely a slow sipper, I could drink this with a nice Quebec cheese plate, fresh croutes and a fig compote. Really nice stuff. Must be great cellared, too.

500ml bottle. Clear reddish brown with a frothy off-white head. Flavors are cherry, plum, raisins, brown sugar, molasses, chocolate, wood and alcohol with earthy and vinous notes. Medium to full body, soft carbonation, liquorous texture.

In short: A liquorish fruity dark sipper. Decent.
How: Swing-top 500ml bottle, consumed many months after purchase.
The look: Dark burgundy body topped by a beige ring of foam.
In long: The medium intensity nose is malty and a tiny bit smoky and I noted dark fruits, raisin pie and other fruity desserts. In mouth the beer has a thick body with a liquorish texture and a low carbonation, adequate sipper mouthfeel. Taste is raisins wrapped in caramel, dates covered with chocolate, dark cherries pie, other stuff that make you fat. High sweetness sensation and medium alcohol presence. Overall it is not all that fruity for a beer classified as a Fruit Beer on ratebeer. Sweet sippers is not exactly my type of beer but this one was ok. A beer simply named after the 19th letter in the alphabet, and I’m still amazed at how convenient it is that our abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz alphabet was created already sorted in alphabetical order.

Brown thick bottle with a swing-top. Pours a real dark brown colour with a creamy beige head, decent retention and some nice thick lacing around the glass. Dark fruit (dates mostly) aromas with some nutty malts. Licorice notes eventually come out. The taste starts off sweet with the fruits (prunes, cherries), then some mild hop bitterness to finish with hints of chocolate, roasted malt and anise. Alcohol is well-hidden. This one a good sipper for sure.

Swing-top bottle, 04/25/2014. Pours deep earthy brown, brighter highlights in the light, with a small, fine hazy head which fades relatively quickly, leaving a small ring of lacing. Aroma is moderately sweet porter-like chocolate notes, mild roast and coffee, opening into sweeter caramel, candied fruits, raisins, berries. Taste is cherries, dates, chewy dark toffee, lingering fruity chocolate. Thick body, yet feels compact because of lower carbonation. Nice complexity, good sipper.
