Note from the brewer: this is not made to be an American Strong Ale or anything else. It’s made to be a kind of barley-based port-like brew with very little carbonation, just enough to protect it against oxydation.

Bottle 500ml. Pours dark brown with low off-white head. Aroma is of caramel, malt, sweetness, alchool. Taste is acidic/bitter. Lots of sugar. Warming alchool. Overall: Good balance. Not outstanding. Expensive $$

Bottle 500 ml. Brown with a small light brown head and no lacing. Aroma of caramel with slight cherries, porto and wood notes. Taste is dark fruits, caramel and porto notes. Slight acidic. Mouthfeel is vinous. Warming alcohol but not overwhelming. Good complexity but lack of balance. Way too sugary to drink it alone.

Rating # 2000. 500 ml swing top bottle purchased at Peluso (Montreal) on December 15, 2011. Ruby dark, thin head. Alcohol aroma with berry and brown sugar, but it’s not too strong. Taste of berries and herbs, hints of bourbon aftertaste of dry alcohol. I do not have much memory of the original "S", but it’s a good beer to get warm!

Bottle: Poured a deep copper color ale with a small foamy head with minimal retention. Aroma of dry fruits and residual sugar is interesting though not as sweet as expected. Taste is also a nice mix between some dry fruits, with light residual sugar and some dry port wine notes. Body is about average with medium carbonation. This is a good sipper though not something I would drink everyday. Not as sweet as expected and no apparent alcohol.

500ml bottle from Broue Ha Ha. Dark ruby brown with a dark tan head that fades quickly to a ring. Dark fruit, malt sugars, raisin, fig and alcohol. Low to mild carbonation, sweet, lots of fruit, becomes dry, bit of red wine and malt is present through the entire thing.

My Bottom Line:
Cherries, black grapes and figs uplift this sipper’s chocolate and wooden smoke, sculpting a refined, balanced expérience.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the purple-laced dark brown.
-The finish is rather short and forgettable.
-Carbonation makes this easy to drink despite the potency.
-Alcohol is very well hidden.
-This is not as sweet as expected.

Lovely big beer. Up front very malty, caramel maybe chocolate or coffee, and roasty. In the middle more dark fruit, like figs, plums and some tangy bits like cherries. Finish is very sweet. Very creamy in the mouth with medium to low carbonation. Pours a very dark, coffee-like. Good stuff!
