2.7 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 JKaranka (28) - Cardiff, WALES - MAR 5, 2013
I might have enjoyed this more than some of the other reviewers. Thing is, I’ve never come across a similar beer. Never seen anything like it produced by a British brewer, so that’s a note of advice. I assume it is a Vienna style or a Munich style beer.
Aroma is terrible, smells of rust and metal. Very off putting. Colour is ok, it is beyond amber and meddling in the middle brown. Flavour is interesting. It is crisp as a lager, but with plenty of malt and caramel. The caramel is maybe more pronounced by the fact that the beer tastes somewhat ’light’ in the malt section, so the caramel flavour sort of is more obvious. I think of it as a pint of a bitter that has been lagered instead of top fermented. It is fairly average at that (there are nicer, more full bodied and flavourful milds) but at least it is something new for me. Interesting to see better examples of the style (nicer aroma, some hop character welcome).
