Bottle. A gusher, producing a big, diminishing off-white head and a clear, dark golden body. The aroma is lightly milkysourish, with toffee, dried fruits and some yeasty and spiced notes. Butterscotch, toffee, dried fruits, yeast notes, sugar and some bitterness. Medium body, pleasant carbonation. A decent one, nothing more. 130504

Bottle. Lively yeast and a bit of a mini-gush. Pours hazy and particulate-filled dark mahogany brown, head is rather excited and soon tuckers itself out. Nose filled with sweet fruity yeast flavors and beautiful doughy character. The berry is supported but lighter plum and there’s a faint dash of licorice under the faint vanilla. Smooth, lightly-carbonated medium body lightly warms, but generally hides its alcohol extremely well. Tons and tons of dense fruity flavor, cherry at the top, kicking off esters and getting some beautiful complexity on that side. Candi sugar, for sure, hops stay out of the way, not too sweet, minimal bitterness, sparklingly fresh yeast with a swath of cream. A wonderful holiday ale.

Deep, super dark brown coloured body with a violet and ruby tinted glow when held up to the light. Thick, three centimetre tall soapy light brown head that explodes from the bottle when opened, but fades fairly quickly. Aroma of tons of caramel, pit fruits, toasted malt, peanuts, earth, pipe tobacco and even some soy sauce and mushrooms. Medium-bodied; Earthy maltiness with a ton of sugars behind showing dates, figs, raisins, concord grapes, peanuts and a bit of lighter chocolates. Aftertaste shows some complexity with the chocolate and sweet notes front and centre with a little earthiness, yeastie qualities and a hint of peat at the tail end. Overall, a nice complex beer with a ton of various flavours from brown sugar to peat to pit fruits and of course yeast and malt - all showing some serious alcohol. I sampled this 33 cL bottle purchased from Bier Tempel in Bruxelles, Belgium on 02-January-2011 for €2,50 sampled at home in Washington on the other side of the pond on 20-October-2012.
